It's not possible to beat him, it's part of the narrative of the DLC area. The frustration of being expected to accomplish the impossible is a reiteration of the Old Hunters plot. Just be happy you made it that far, that's true completion of the content!

I'm stuck on Orphan right now as well. Still haven't gone back to it because DaS3 came out right around the same time. Although one thing I discovered in a YT video was that the area you fight him in is actually pretty fucking huge. I never realized how far you could go out in the water. Next time I attempt him I'm going to move out more instead of bunching myself in near the rocks.
