Honestly, if you don't pay a cent for it upfront (PS+ subscription fees notwithstanding) Gone Home isn't THAT awful. It's short and the story is hit or miss but it tells that story well and has pretty well realized sound design and general artistic direction for what it's trying to do. I'd say it's worth a shot for "free", but definitely don't pay for it.

The near complete lack of gameplay is a major downside but it does do a thing or two that games with, well, gameplay should do more often. Well, online gameplay is a pretty big thing for most people in this day and age, unless you own Nintendo consoles mostly. That's why most consider it "mandatory". Mandatory in the sense that it can't be a viable platform for them unless they pay for PS+.
