The game starts with you and your bros going on a road trip and leaving town. While you are at, your city gets wrecked and you come back to see it destroyed and under enemy control. This starts the adventure proper.
The movie tells the story of the city getting wrecked from the perspective of the Kings Glaive- the personal knights sworn to protect the City at all cost. So basically, the movie shows how the city gets wrecked while you fuck off with your friends on vacation for the first hour of the game.
The anime technically takes place after the movie and after the first chapter of the game, but none of the events in the anime actually happen in the game and the anime is more of a way to show and develop some of the relationships between the characters and their personalities and what not. The Anime is also a vehicle for flashbacks to give some backstory on shit. The anime is only 5 episodes long.
