Honestly, Star Ocean, Tales and, Final Fantasy(FFXV could redeem it, but I'm not hopeful)all went to shit, newer ones like Valkyria, Ki No Ku Ni, Neptunia, etc, are all pretty shit as well. As it stands, SMT/Persona are the only good JRPGs left, and they're majority handheld or once a generation at this point, leaving the genre stagnant

Console development takes too long and they tend to focus on presentation. Just look at SO4/5. They focused on good character models instead of good level design, gameplay, story, or voice acting. At least with handheld games, they can spend less time on that so the games themselves get made well.

Most people's favorites are often flawed gems.
MonsterHunter is very fun but getting into it for the first time is a nightmare, it has a long-ass tutorial that doesn't even explain 1/3 of what you need to know, and as a new guy you need to have 3 or 5 tabs opens while playing it, to see which weapon upgrade path you should take, monster item drop %'s and weakpoints, etc etc.
Nier is one of my favorite games of all time but the combat is pretty shit or at best mediocre.
Dragon's Dogma has one of the best combat systems but the overworld is pretty shit, side-quests are all boring and the game peaks in the DLC dungeon which is pretty much a boss rush mode.
EtrianOdyssey has some of the best dungeon crawlan' out there, with fun and interesting class interactions. But it lacks on presentation and story (haven't played the remakes though)
EDF4.1 is the best game ever but it looks like shit and often drops to 10fps.
So on and so forth.
I'm in no way a SO fan, I've only played 4 to completion. I just so happen to want a cringefest and a fun battle system, and SO5 offers me both. I'm not short on money either so I really don't see the problem. Buying a B-tier Jrpg won't make A-tier ones like SMT/Persona/DQ11 disappear. I'll play them all the same.

And how is this a bad point for me? I told you 4 or 5 times now that I _ENJOY_ the cheesyness of the presentation. Nearly every cutscene in SO4 made my eyes roll,'kay?
I like modern StarOcean for that, so I'm buying it.
Next month, alongside SO5, I'm also buying OdinSphere and GrandKingdom, which have much better voice acting and a more serious presentation. Later in the year many more Jrpg/Arpgs will come out that fill in the "polished" "well presented" blanks. Variety is the spice of life, Anon.

I would also have a much narrower perspective on what is bad and what is good.

1. Medium budgeted AA RPG games does really well on handhelds.
2. The big AAA action games does fucking amazing in the industry.
3. Square Enix doesn't deem traditional RPGs AAA worthy anymore. And they matter, because without any real AAA precedents that proved to be successful, developers won't invest in attempting to make one. Especially not when the cheaper AA handheld games are proving to work.
I really hope FFXV bombs and that Dragon Quests does really well.

FF always has been a casual JRPG series with budget. FF becoming one of the staple AAA franchise like those ubisoft games would be a great thing for everyone.
FF always tried to come up with some new and fresh JRPG combat system but they are not going to keep it up forever, and FF13 proved that they should just stop and stick with a more orthodox action oriented combat.

I just hope if all those rumors become true that both consoles will fail. I'm buying a console because I know it'll serve me for at least 5 years and I won't need to upgrade it like my PC to get the best out of the games.
