Costume designs are often very well done too. How can edgelord 1-handers and weebshit 2-handers ever compete?
They look cool but are almost always boring as shit or underpowered. Most games also under utilize the shield aspect like crazy or they make blocking good at the expense of making all of your other skills terrible for balancing sake.
Greatsword users, while being the biggest animu bait, have insanely high HP, DPS and self healing abilities to make up for the lack of a shield but are almost always good in any game they are in.
Sword and shield has really fallen from grace, but hey at least you can look cool right?
Sword and board has always been my favorite fantasy setting archetype. It is a shame they are usually low tier in video games.

Because average gamer knows nothing about medieval combat. If it would feature in a game, players would get rekt by AI since players would rush with their sword and shield rather than using spear with 12 feet reach to target enemy's neck/chest/hands.
