Dragon Quarter basically had no reason to be a Breath of Fire game. Calling it one, and then building a game that more resembled Vagrant Story (not an entirely bad thing, mind you), but it wasn't the Breath of Fire game anyone asked for, and is probably a part of the reason we'll likely never see a real BoF game again.

Great game. I think it's the series' best but I understand why people hate it. It's hard, insanely dark, and a totally different game-play from all the other games. I genuinely wish it was called something else, if only for all the haters of the last reason wouldn't have that excuse anymore. It's absolutely a delight to play and I genuinely regret not buying it back when it first release.
My only real hang up is story being cut until you do a new game plus, but given how most people will probably not beat it on their first file anyway maybe that's a moot point.

In addition if you bring Bleu/Deis into the final battle,St. Evaclaims that she helped defeat the goddess.
There's also Nina2 going to get the power of the great bird and meeting her ancestor Nina1.
3 has a mural that depicts the cast of BoF1 fighting the goddess so it's definitely after 1.

yeah I know about the mural, good points on 2, so that has to put it behind 1, 4 is def somewhere close to 3 I'd reckon though, I've seen some people say that 4 is the first game in the timeline, but I'm not sure how it holds up considering 3 and 4 do have the common desertification thing going on

The setting was kinda. The stupidest thing to me is that they limited Dragon transformations. Only one dragon is lame(though I actually think the design is cool) and the D meter is stupid. The concept is okay, but the fact theres no way to bring it down is retarded. It keeps you from using your Dragon powers, which is the whole fucking point of a BoF game.

yeah and the point of DQ was for you to show some restraint and not give into the dragon because that was a theme of the game, like when bosch gave up his humanity at the end just so he could kill ryu, who had this god like power at his disposal but chose only to use it when absolutely necessary and that was mostly to save his friends.
But I do agree that they should have had some way to lower it, but the game def grew on me even though I hated it at first

It comes down to whether the world in 4 is the same world as 1-2-3. If the idea is that Ryu and Deis were pulled TO the BoF world from somewhere else, then it has to be first, to explain Endless in 1-2-3. This would also be why it can't be after 3, as Deis dies at the end of 3 which would mean she would have to have been pulled from the afterlife, but it's mentioned that her and Ryu came from the same world, which would mean he would also have to have been pulled from there. But since he doesn't look like any of the 3 previous Ryus, that's doesn't work.
If 4's world is an alternate world that Ryu and Deis were pulled to FROM the normal BoF one, that'd be another way of doing things.

legend of dragoon combat was novel, and the dragoon forms were fun, but sadly the game was pretty mediocre in execution everywhere else, though its story had moments, theres a reason that shit is a cult game and not considered one of the greatest rpgs like many fans claim it is

The only thing this game needed to be actually quite good would be a hack for the percentage thing.
I can stomach it ticking whenever you enter dragon form but walking around and fighting normally shouldn't have increased it.
