Why don't western game developers give the slightest fuck about having memorable/good music?

>Shadow of the Colossus
>Final Fantasy
>Gunstar Heroes
>Jet Set Radio
>Metal Gear Solid
>Zelda
>Metroid
>Mario
>Gradius

If you're able to name more than three western games with soundtracks that you frequent, I will legit be backed the fuck out.
>>
Deus Ex
Uh...Morrowind maybe?
Stalker has some cool guitar songs but I don't frequent it

Well fuck, OP, that's a legitimate challenge.
>>
I could, but they're all Indie.
>>
>>339455749
Ambient soundtracks like Skyrim/Morrowind and so on are questionable also. They work because they fade into the background, but try asking anyone to hum anything other than the main theme from Skyrim/Morrowind.

>Deus Ex
The main theme of 45 seconds or so was the only decent thing about the game and pretty unrepresentative of the game's tone.
>>
>>339455936
That's pretty true: Axiom Verge, Undertale, Hotline Miami have awesome soundtracks.

Western AAA doesn't give the slightest fuck about music tho.
>>
Crypt of the Necrodancer has a pretty good soundtrack too. Why don't AAAs invest in good music? The spend a fuckload on everything else.
>>
MAYBE Starcraft Brood War?t

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mzfnUIdzq4

Sad to see that Blizzard couldn't care less about music in their games nowadays.
>>
Diablo
Doom (original)
Civ iv
Shadowrun (snes)
>>
>>339455539
FEAR had a solid OST that you wouldn't play everyday but set the mood well, Crysis had some really nice music, and pretty much every RareWare game had solid music so take your pick of Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Perfect Dark, Conker's BFD, etc if you don't like the first two non-RareWare games i said.
>>
The only soundtrack I've been going back to is new DOOM's, but I generally end up listening to Meshuggah instead after a song or two.
>>
Morrowind
Oblivion
Witcher 1
Fable TLC
Brutal legend
Divine Divinity
World of Warcraft
Guild Wars
>>
>>339456380
>Meshuggah
I know it's their thing, but do they have an album where every song doesn't just turn into a constant drone ie it's more prog-esque?
>>
>>339455539

Op you huge faggot, you didn't include any of the Dark souls games in your list.

Soul of cinders theme is so badass and fitting that I almost wept a little when I killed him
>>
>>339456342
>Doom (original)
Shamelessly ripped off Pantera and other metal bands.
>>
>>339456484
>Goading me for not having an encyclopedic original post
Bitch please you must be smoking rocks. Souls is bomb af.
>>
>>339456556
And?
What music isn't inspired in some way by other music?
>>
Banner Saga has some good soundtracks to be honest. Some Oblivion soundtracks also stuck in head too.
>>
>>339456483
I've only listened to a select few songs, I can't do a whole album in one so I only ever listen to about three of their songs. I'd imagine it's all pretty much in the same vein though.
>>
>>339455539
Idk but i never play asian games because i hate the fucking overloaded music.
>>
>>339456484
Dark souls soundtracks are pretty shit. No offense.
>>
>>339455539
do valve games count
>>
Remember Me
Tomb Raider (not the 2 last ones, they're shit at every level)
Dragon Age (all of them)
Oblivion
Guild Wars
Mass Effect
Mirror's Edge
The Witcher 3
Assassin's Creed 2

I'm surprised you didn't include Dark Souls in your list, that's some godly music.
>>
>>339456689
There's a difference between "using something as reference" and "shamelessly ripping off". You should pay some mind Anon.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4H3BB2gKKeY

If that's not shameless theft then I might as well start speaking Chinese and move to Beijing.
>>
>>339455539
Rockstar?
I really dig HEALTH's stuff for Max Payne 3, and I recently noticed the original music that kicks in during chase sequences/etc. for GTA V is actually pretty decent.

Also, I haven't played any Uncharted games, and can't remember TLoU, but whoever Naughty Dog got for Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter (the first one, haven't played 2/3 yet) made chill as fuck music. I think Crash 2 was the high point.
>>
Do japs follow the trend of "let's shove generic orchestrated music into everything"
>>
>>339456886

It's alright, you're entitled to your opinion.
>>
>>339455539
Dawn of War, Empire Earth, Deus Ex, any Elder Scrolls Game, Bastion, Transistor, Stronghold, Dragon Age Origins, Diablo series, Warcraft series (and WoW), Age of Empires 3, Doom....I can keep going

You on the other hand already listed every decent Japanese series ever made.

Frozen Synapse
Hotline Miami
Space Pirate Trainer

Those tracks are legit good and had palpable tension for the boss fights they were intended for. They're actually outstanding.

Way more textured, layered, intricate, and crafted than anything the DX soundtrack had. You honestly should take a piano class or watch a DAW tutorial sometime. You seem like a fine Anon, but you're just plain wrong here and someday you'll come into your own.

I'm positive that the DX composers would revere the Gunstar composers in a league above themselves. There's absolutely no parity between the soundtracks of those two games.

To answer your question seriously. Western AAA developers typically go for ambient music. Ambient music often slides into the background and is relatively low key, so the music doesn't stand out or sounds as memorable. Japanese developers typically go for music that stands out. There are obviously exceptions though (like DOOM).
>>
Hotline Miami
Hotline Miami 2
Spyro the dragon
>>
>>339462763
>Deus Ex OST is infinitely better and also has plenty of layering and texture
Not even him, but the Deus Ex OST has none of those. It has its melodic front, maybe some synths thrown in for ambience and that's about it. The synths even sound pretty bad by current standards. It's as straight forward as it gets.
>>
I could name you a lot more than 3 games but they'd all be composed by Jeremy Soule (Total Annihilation, Guild Wars series, TES series or Grant Kirkhope (Rare games) so I guess your point still stands.

>>339463186
And the Genesis soundchip is a couple of grimy-sounding simple wave channels. What is your point? There is plenty of subtlety and variety in the Deus Ex soundtrack, and even if the synths don't sound particularly high quality they were well-used. Gunstar Heroes on the other hands is definitely not a great example of working with what you have. If you want that then go look at something like Thunder Force IV, iuno.

Is that so? I am glad your grasp on the English language is so superior. Please enlighten me with your amazing music taste. I am glad that you know all about my musical interests now that you know I prefer Deus Ex to Gunstar Heroes. The best part is that you came in and agreed with me too, so you literally wedged yourself into this conversation just because I used those 2 common English words.

Mirror's Edge
Mass Effect

I'll admit that japanese games generally have better music than western games but I can definitely name three games.

>Oblivion
Say what you want about the game itself but the music was fantastic.

>Witcher 3
Very good music. Witcher 2's music wasn't bad either.

>Hotline Miami
The music matched the game perfectly. It got the blood pumping and put you in the zone.

And why are you so upset people don't dig your favorite Japanese chiptunes? Rethink your life choices if that's the kind of stuff that riles you up.
>>
>>339464435
I think probably I like the idea behind Hotline Miami's soundtrack more than the actual music unfortunately. If you go back and listen to the soundtrack you will probably find that the tracks aren't as exciting or memorable as you thought and some of them have very loud production in a bad way.
>>
>>339464667
I disagree. Maybe a couple songs. But then again I grew up listening to shitty punk rock so I don't notice production value all that much. Especially with EDM unless it strays into dubstep territory.

Fuck with me bro.
>>
>>339464782
Go listen to Roller Mobster or Miami Disco. I think a lot of people would say those were 2 of the most impactful tracks in their respective games. They are produced in a way that is very loud (especially all the distortion and the drums) and it doesn't really allow you to hear the other parts of the track well without hurting your ears. I like the idea of making great sounding synths with a nod to the late 70s and 80s and a modern production twist all in a fast-paced exciting track, but I don't think the genre is quite there yet.

>>339464927
Again, those are both common words in the English language. I will admit I misused the word texture, though. What I really meant is more like the tracks being memorable by being topological. In other words, there is a variety to the composition - for instance, each track has 4-5 very different parts to it as the game uses the dynamic soundtrack system, and from area to area they are also distinguishable enough to be memorable to me. I wasn't talking about a robustness or thickness to the instruments themselves.

By layering I simply meant that I greatly prefer the use of the instruments to mesh together as a whole in Deus Ex compared to Gunstar, again, it is a common word. Of course the soundtrack is not some crazy complicated math rock with counterpoints while there's off-the-wall crazy jazzy syncopated drumming, sure, but you don't need that to use terms like layering.

That's a dumb comparison. You remember Japanese soundtracks because they typically go for melodic and catchy OSTs that are easy to remember, while Western games typically go for atmosphere and tone-setting in their music (and even then, there are countless exceptions).
>>

>>
A lot of people seem to like Super Meat Boy but it never really wowed me. Bastion was mentioned in this thread multiple times. It is high quality but I find the composition itself to be boring.

I found that I liked several Binding of Isaac's tracks. The remake didn't do it for me though. It sounds more professional but it lacks the raw energy and heart.

I thought Shovel Knight's was pretty impressive, especially considering that the guy made a version of it that actually works on an NES (though probably VRC6 or something advanced like that).

Find a struggling indie dev on twitter who plans to put something on Greenlight.

There's a bunch, I can't namedrop any unfortunately. You can find some on Reddit as well.

If you haven't had training in traditional music (piano, music theory) I highly recommend it. Just focus on making music regularly and having a good time making music even if it's not precisely what you want.

Knowing a DAW is great, but fundamentals are what's going to help you make a living. It's the same thing with a person who "knows photoshop really well" but has poor traditional drawing skills.
