It's never good to assume or speculate what route Nintendo will go. Even if you try to figure out a nicely powered, but still affordable path, Nintendo will find a way to aim lower.

Right, but it would have been much more powerful than what the Wii ended up being, while still directly progressing from Gamecube's hardware.

I think that GPU was put together by the same guys [ArtX team] that worked on the Gamecube's Flipper.
It's going to be two "Consoles", though that's stretching the term a little bit.
The first will be a more traditional video gaming console. No huge gimmicks, but the controller will have in-built motion controls, and it will be backwards compatible with the WiiU. The sold-separately "Controller Pro" will have a WiiU-style screen. It will be more powerful than the current PS4 and XBone, but not so much that you'd really notice.
The second console won't be a game console at all, but a "Quality of life" machine, and where the main gimmick will go. Remember the Wii's News channel and weather channel and stuff? This is that, but an entire machine dedicated to it.
It also has no controllers at all, and instead works on a movement-recognition system that works superficially similar to the Kinect, but way, WAY the fuck more responsive, and works in 3D space the wya the Kinect doesn't.
Each device will be roughly $250, with a bundle for both for $400.
