Starting my second play-through tonight, this time on Pain Mode. Been awhile since I first played so any tips would be appreciated.

I can't really say that undertale was complete shit but I do think lisa the painful and the joyful were much more engaging and emotional game than undertale which makes me sad that lisa gets completely ignored and undertale is praised beyond belief .

Lisa is a perfect complement to Undertale since takes almost the opposite concept and manages to be emotional too. It's a good game but could have used a better gameplay (not that I didn't enjoy it though)

Lisa has sold well enough. Steamspy says just under 200k sales. There's plenty of somewhat decent indie games with less than a few thousand in sales.

It was okay. I enjoyed the ending a lot more because I understood everything as it happened the first time. While there's nothing wrong with little hints and leaving a lot of the story to be "discovered" through replays, I felt the ending to the Painful had less impact on me than it could have had thanks to all the lesser information I hadn't picked up on yet.
The fact the Joyful was just a Boss Rush with no areas to grind was definitely different, although I don't really feel like it was as difficult as a lot of people seemed to imply it was.

Did you play joyful before the easy mode patch. Before that patch it's was near impossible to beat the game without joy but that patch gave buddy the ability to mend which ment that you could just tank enemies attacks.

It tried to tie the story together. This was done through entirely through exposition. So we have several of these dialogues in which we're explicitly told various secrets, what actually happened etc. Feels poorly done and takes out the mystery of the original in bad way.

But my biggest complaint was the fact that Dingaling just pulls some random list of no name warlords and has them act as the main "villains" of the story, rather than having Buddy deal with the characters that had more of a direct impact on her and Brad

one party member RPGs don't work very well. if it were a more stealth/action focused sidescrolling game like it was intended to be it would have ended up a bit better.
also buddy and yado's same motivation for more power is the lamest and most over-used shit ever, they were way worse characters than the whole Brad - Rando - Buzzo triangle.

It's not just that.
It's the fact that all of this exposition has literally nothing to do with Buddy's goal of taking out every Warlord on the list.
We learn so much about characters that were a major driving force in The Painful, only to have all this back story wasted when they don't even appear outside of cutscenes/dialog in The Joyful.
If they had use that same level of storytelling to actually build up the people on The List, it would have been a better game. Or if they had made the names on The List be the characters we were ultimately learning about, it would have been a greater game.
But instead we just get this massive disconnect, where Dingaling tried to tie up loose ends from Painful while sacrificing an entirely new story he established with Joyful.
I absolutely hate when games (especially indie titles) try to branch out into different forms of media to build the world and lore, but in the case of LISA and especially The Joyful, _not_ doing that is what caused it to fail.

joyful should have instead followed ricky/sticks/buddy's journey through the game concurrent with brad. could have followed buddy's switch from liking Brad and his friends to learning to hate him and the rest of the world (which would better explain her character when you find her in painful), would have allowed more development of those characters + marty, buzzo, and rando, you'd have gotten to see more of the lively side of olathe, and it'd still manage to preserve painful's 10/10 ending.

I hated this
I went through the entire painful thinking of Brad as a misguided father trying to keep buddy shut away from the world, becoming so obsessed with saving her that he destroys everything left in his life.
But then right at the beginning of Joyful its immediately shown that brad forces buddy to kill someone in cold blood? When the beginning of painful showed him trying to bond with her and keep her firmly secluded from the outside world. Just didn't feel right at all. I mean that's his entire justification for his crusade to find her, "she's just a kid"

I feel like Buddy's personality is just too weird. It's not really motivated enough for why she is like she is. In the original she mostly serves a purpose and isn't much of a character by herself. The result is kind of that she doesn't have the interesting relationships that Brad has with various characters that turn many encounters interesting.
