It really doesn't. The vast majority of cancer research is conducted using grants from pharmaceutical companies, philanthropists, charities, and government funding. Very little of the money that is paid to hospitals and other medical practices goes towards anything other than overhead, paying staff, and investors. Specialized medical institutions like cancer centers and such rely on relationships with researchers and pharm companies to provide "cutting edge" treatments in exchange for research data. They cost more, but would cost a shitload more if they cared about recovering money from patients.
