In my relatively uninformed belief, the NX is actually a hope. If the Wii-U were a success you don't think they'd make a proper Metroid for it? Since Nintendo wants the NX to obviously not be a repeat of the Wii-U they know they'll need a strong lineup for it. A real Metroid could only help.

Samus is too closely tied with the lore, I think. She's the last Chozo Warrior, currently the last Metroid, and generally considered to be one of, if not the strongest single being in the Metroid universe.
What new character could be introduced to compete with Samus at all? The guys from Hunters may have competed with Samus in gameplay, but in lore they all turned out to be shitters that Gorea wiped out at the same time while Samus cleaned up the mess. If ammo drops just fell commonly I'd like Prime 2 a lot more. Needing to use a beam to get the other Beams ammo was trash. I ended up playing like at least half of that game using the standard power beam. I did like the dark and light power missiles though, but goddamn did they consume resources. I also really hated how similar most of the environments looked. I know it's an issue of "this is a dying world" but still.
The best things about Prime 2 are the levels being fairly big and the combat being a lot more challenging.

The Metroid series has always been a financial failure, they have no reason to continue making it outside of passion. Clearly there will be some exceptions (especially in the passionate gaming community), but I feel like most of the people who would buy a console for a Metroid game would buy a console for the rest of Nintendo's lineup as well. I like the series, but let's not play pretend and think that it was anything beyond an abnormality in Nintendo's history of profit-driven ventures.
