Basically Tidus gets manifested in current Spira and eventually destroys Spira, not really realizing what's happening until near the end.

"Zanarkand" is in Spira out in the middle of the fucking ocean near the temple where you get anima.
Sin was cruising out chillaxing around that area protecting zanarkand or some shit to make sure nobody from "spira" could find it. Jecht got too close to the edge and sin noticed him and brought him into the real world.
There's a part I don't fully understand but I think it goes like this.
Yevon were a people who abused machina and went to war with Zanarkand for whatever reason, Zanarkand's summoners then made the fayth to keep zanarkand's memory alive in the form of the dreams.
How Sin comes into this is lost on me.
I would assume Sin was a part of the summoning but then Yu Yevon, whoever the fuck that is, took control of Sin and went power nuts considering he can control summons.

They're both very intelligent, but Squall has confidence that Quistis lacks, and Quistis has tact that Squall lacks, among other things. No they didn't, the people that became fayth for summoning Dream Zanarkand are at Mt. Gagazet, aka literally right next door to the real Zanarkand. It's pretty clear that they evacuated the people to there when they were losing the war. Also keep in mind Zanarkand was THE summoner city. They were all about that summon shit, it's where it originally came from. So to preserve a form of the city, of course they go to summoning.

Kinda. Jecht is Truman, who swims so far out to sea he runs into the whale because he's that much of a badass, but then ends up getting washed out to Spira when the whale realises the jig is up. Then after FFX-3 (I fucking wish) concludes with him becoming said whale, while he still has free will he crashes the Dream Zanarkand party so that Tidus can end up in Spira and discover the sacred Nipponese art of whale hunting.

As far as they were concerned the rest of the world was just doing whatever it was doing I think. Dream Zanarkand is a replica of Zanarkand at the height of it's power, so anyone there would just think everything outside is fine. And why would anyone choose to leave Zanarkand anyway, it's such a hip and happening place. Pretty sure some people did accidentally go missing or get lost and washed up in Spira though and those are the others that are "infected by Sin's toxins".

Nothing, really. Yunalesca is the one that started everything and perpetuated the Yevon religion after Yevon lost control of Sin.
Everybody thought it was a literal embodiment of Sin that would always kill any that commit sinful acts (mainly using machina) when in reality it was a guardian that destroyed anything it saw as a threat to Dream Zanarkand (that being major settlements and machina)

The way I understand it, Yevon is summoning Zanarkand along with Tidus who are the aeons of the wall of fayth. The summoner Yevon calls the aeons from the fayth in the same way Yuna does but he can't possess the aeons he is summoning.

Auron was an Unsent. Unsent are people that basically are too stubborn to die. So after he helped save the world he had no reason to be stubborn and accepted his path to the afterlife and vanished because of that.
Tidus vanished because the Fayth were fucking tired of constantly maintaining Zanarkand but knew they had to to keep Sin under control, but once Sin got rekt they finally keeled over and died, thus stopping summoning Dream Zanarkand and Tidus along with it.

Real Zanarkand was pretty much a self sustaining metropolis that was somewhat isolated (giant mountain in the way does that to you) from the rest of the place. They're able to live and function like any other city, except it was one of the grandest cities of it's time, so that carries into the summoned version.

Sin is a giant monster terrorizing the whole of Spira all to defend a replica of a city that was destroyed 1000 years ago, while Yu Yevon over that time degenerated from simply despising Bevelle into a mindless parasitical creature with no other function than to keep reviving said supermonster. That's kinda villainous, at least in the present day, but while they at least had their reasons back then they gotta learn to let go of the past.
Tidus was already explained a ton, but as for Auron, he's just a dead Spiran. They show you pretty clearly that if someone dies with a strong will and desire to finish things left undone, they're able to cling to a physical form instead of going to the Farplane (Spira "heaven", sort of). For most people they're just pissed off that they die and if left mad too long they become fiends. This is a really big thing in the game.

Sin's purpose is not to kill everyone in Spira but to defend Dream Zanarkand. Machina are a threat to Zanarkand so it seeks to destroy machina. There is also the Calm to consider. The tradition of summoners destroying Sin prevents the total population from being wiped out, and also explains the survival of Bevelle as a machina-based city.

Sin ain't harmless at all. It's summoned for two main purposes. 1. Defend Dream Zanarkand. 2. Search and destroy Bevelle forces. Of course back in the day, Bevelle was the machina capital of Spira, so anything that gets even slightly close to that level of technology gets set upon by a berserk giant fiend launching whale beast.
When Sin was first summoned, it completely laid waste to Bevelle's entire army and most of Bevelle itself. Over time people started to consider it their punishment for starting the war, and later for using machina. This is how it got the name Sin, so ironically people renounced machines and ended up practicing Zanarkand's summoning while founding the religion of (Yu) Yevon that preaches atonement for what they did.
Eventually people wanted to stop Sin from doing the whole random pillage thing and after a long pilgrimage honing her summoning, Yunalesca turned her bae and guardian Zaon into a fayth for the most kickass aeon yet, A summoning that strong though meant she died, but she managed to remain as an Unsent to spread the knowledge of how she did it, and Sin was destroyed. Or so they thought...

No. They transform one of their companions into a summon to fight Sin. If they defeat Sin, Yu Yevon takes over the body of the summon and kills the summoner. No summoner actually becomes Sin.

You have to sacrifice two people. The Summoner dies creating the Final Aeon. The Final Aeon is made by sacrificing someone you love, which would often be the guardians you spent months (years?) travelling the world with.

The way this works is that a guardian of the summoner becomes the fayth for the Final Summoning. The Final Aeon is then summoned in order to defeat Sin, but at that point, Yu Yevon within Sin possesses the Final Aeon and kills the summoner. After which, Yevon crafts Sin around the Final Aeon again during the period of the Calm and Sin re-emerges once again.

With XIII it seems pretty evident that the whole thing about 'finding your focus' was what probably worked as the core around which all the other nonsense was built, but with X I'm not so sure.
I'm interested to see how FFXV will handle the whole father-son relationship. Seems it will be rather different from FFX in that regard.
