The game itself is way more casual but at a pub level the difference isn't as huge as in competitive.
The game also has a few creative hero designs.

And here's where we learn you've never played Dota.
Characters talking to each other and having situational responses for everything from killing or laning with particular heroes to buying certain amounts of a given item has a lot more character than a voice acted meme-tier tutorial with no real personality to it.
HotS is fine as a casual game for when you want to dick around with friends or just turn your brain off and mash some health bars down, but a HotS player seriously comparing himself to Dota or even LoL is just hilarilous.

The laning phase in Dota is not a stalemate like in LoL. Rotations happen early on depending on the line up and teleporting is available to everyone, so if you play with people that pay attention/give a fuck you will experience some clutch tps that deny the enemy an easy dive kill, for example.

Smite's gameplay is completely flat. Paragon has a Z-axis; you actually aim in 3D, and the map has meaningful height variation. Smite also does not have actual graphics.
