I played this game when it released as a child and when I looked up the music before replaying it again this theme the Sheva fight was the memory that attached itself to this theme. I actually thought it was Sheve's theme music and realized it was the theme for every boss battle.

PE2 is shit because this was the era when they thought Resident Evil style tank control was a cool thing to implement for 3D games over perfectly functioning dual shock controls. PE1 is better if you can ignore the stupid story which was what Japanese writers thought American police force was like and missed the mark by a mile. The third one is actually the best one overall.
PE2 is my favorite game in the series. The plot isn't as good as in the original, but I think it's a step up otherwise. It's also one of the more replayable games I've encountered due to how much the difficulty modes and your equipment/ability choices change the experience.
Third Birthday is a fairly good TPS, but it has perhaps the worst plot of any game ever made. Yes, it's worse than NES games where the entire storyline is contained in one badly-translated paragraph. It's worth playing, but it's best not to think of it as a part of the series.

Honestly, anyone that even remotely considers themselves a fan of the series should check out the roots.
The original novel is a fucking masterpiece that the game can't even begin to touch.
The movie adaptation of the book is okay, but very tame with completely different scenes, but worth a watch since it's on youtube
The manga adaptation is pretty fun, but nearly impossible to track down.

Some of the old cast became jrpg cringworthy in a game that's supposed to minic the west. Cutscenes were like Kingdom Hearts trying to be a western game(mah light and darkness). Enemies and bosses were glossier than a new iPhone taking away the creepy or horrorness of the game. Time travel cop out to make the game seem deep. you went to a lot of its landmarks, but there sure as hell wasnt much exploring. these are very linear games and it felt like an on rails tour most of the time only you could go back to previous places to grind.
and only about 35-40% of 2 was the desert town. and while it fallowed RE's level design it also felt like there was a lot more optional rooms/areas. it hid its linearity better.

PE1 had so much variety and each area felt distinct. PEII just feels like I've been there before, even when it's the first time.
I never played the first one when it came out as I don't think it was released here.
