After playing doom 4 and coming back to doom 3 I can confirm that doom 3 is the worst game to ever be released with dooms name on it.

>doom 3

>>339416509
It's not great, anon. It's just a slower, cinematic, jump scare game.
doom 4 is a solid 4/10
can anyone explain why they drastically try to make doom 3 some shitty horror game.

I NEED A BIGGER GUN

Because of Half-Life. Maybe System Shock.
>>339417127
>slower, cinematic, jump scare game
I always play it in my head like this
>boss! carmack made a new engine and it looks fantastic!
>brilliant! what game will it be?
>...game?
>fuck. any chance of romera coming back and getting him to come up with some more occult demon gore shit?
>b-but boss, they still refuse to talk to each other!
>yeah, well... what was this game called again the kids liked so much? dumb?
>doom, sir
>yeah, exactly, go make dune 2 then
>doom 2 already exists, sir
>then put a 3 at the end? is this so fucking hard?
>boss! what kind of game should carmack even make?
>just tell carmack to make the game look super high tech with the new engine to impress the mor- I mean ****gaming journalists****. and of course demons, demons always sell.every day I pray for you, john, so you may escape the endless jew.
doom 2 was the best and only best doom game ever. GOAT
>>339418232
What beef did carmack and Romero had ?
>>339418462
This
>>339418462
it's not known. they don't talk about it.
the only known thing is, that carmack is the autist and code wizard, while romero was the edgemaster aspie, whose great lust for metal and anime gave carmacks code flesh and a face.
this team of autist and aspie should have never met in the first place. because the inferior aspie will always bully the introvert autist. carmack probably never even wanted to make games. maybe he just cut ties after he realized that with the success of doom, romero had no power anymore over him.
>>339416357
I've been sayjng this for fucking years and finally it starts being relevant
>>339420358
They were together at least through Quake 1 though.
I hear Romero was indecisive and difficult to work with, changing the direction of Quake, which probably contributed to the falling out.
>>339420516
>I've been sayjng this for fucking years and finally it starts being relevant
Why would it matter if you said it years ago, before the game is even out? This is the kind of thing that needs proving.
If you just mean the part about Doom 3 being the worst, many people have already believed that for some time.
>>339420358
>Mfw Romero was what made Doom good
>Mfw Carmack, despite being a computer wizard genius, is still a hack and gets all the undeserved credit for Doom to this day.
Romero is the bro here.
>>339420883
>gets all the undeserved credit for Doom to this day.
For as much shit as Romero gets for things like Daikatana, I think most people know how crucial he was to Doom.
>>339420358
You're retarded, they were both excellent programmers that was what they initially bonded over, the tensions came when carmack became solely interested in the tech and not the game at all, resulting in quake's development becoming a nightmare of constantly changing tools and wasted effort for everyone not working on the engine.
>>339421117
Daikatana is honestly bullshit in itself. Everyone hates Romero for Daikatana, yet Carmack gets a free pass for the abortion that was Doom 3 and RAGE. Daikatana hate is just a protomeme that escalated out of control.
>>339416357
is this drawn by that same artist that does all that futa absorption into dick stuff? forget the name
>>339416357
Modeseven's porn is getting more and more murdery by the month.
>>339420606
>I hear Romero was indecisive and difficult to work with
I wouldn't expect anything else. most likely started a drug habit too. and I'm willing to bet a hundred bucks that the ferrari was his idea too.
just look at how he changed from geek to player, while carmack today still looks like a nerd.
>>339421180
Carmack thought Romero knew more about programming when he met him at Softdisk. Too bad Carmack surpassed him in a matter of weeks (he did the smooth scrolling Mario 3 clone while at Softdisk which was thought to be undoable on the PCs they had and had a job lined up with Sierra - until they decided to do remain independent) and with the years to a comical, exponential level
>>339421408
I like his long haired/shaven look more, glad he went back to it.
>>339420606
>>339421408
>indecisive
I think I chose the wrong word there. I heard he was overpoweringly opinionated against things they wanted to nail down. Indecisive from the team standpoint perhaps. But definitely difficult to work with
I think I knew a guy like that in college, and I shudder to think about working with him on a project like that.
>>339421408
>just look at how he changed from geek to player
Romero looks like a huge dork these days
>>339421670
I wouldn't say that. he is not the young guy anymore, but he was always the charismatic one of the two. he really should stick to design. daikatana was a mess, but I still enjoyed the pirated version in co-op, mostly because of the surreal worlds, weapons and enemies.
>>339421967
Does that look like a "player" to you? Looks like someone's hippie dad
>>339416357
That's one cringy drawing OP
>>339420358
>>339418462
Romero was a lazy fuck who spent more time working on projects for other companies like hexen and heretic, than he did on Doom 2 and Quake. I remember reading an article american mcgee wrote years ago about how everyone in the office hated Romero because he'd come in the office and play death match, then take off while everyone was trying to get shit done.
>>339420883
>Mfw Carmack, despite being a computer wizard genius, is still a hack and gets all the undeserved credit for Doom to this day.
Fuck off, Doom was very much a collaborative effort and Carmack may get more credit than he is due, but that's partly due to him being one of the only few who stuck around at id while everyone else left.
I'll post this here as well.
>John Carmack, lead programmer at id Software, designed the Doom internals from the ground up to allow players to extend the game. For that reason, game data such as levels, graphics, sound effects, and music are stored separately from the game engine, in "WAD files". This allowed players to make their own data without making any modifications to the engine. According to Doom's initial design document, WAD stands for "Where's All the Data?".
>The idea of making Doom easily modifiable was primarily backed by Carmack, a well-known supporter of copyleft and the hacker ideal of people sharing and building upon each other's work, and by John Romero, who had hacked games in his youth and wanted to allow other gamers to do the same. Not everybody in the id Software crew was happy with this development, however; some, including Jay Wilbur and Kevin Cloud, objected due to legal concerns and in the belief that it would not be of any benefit to the company's business.
>tfw Kevin Cloud is one of two who still work at id and is probably a majorr reason why Snapmap is the only thing we have
>>339416357
FUCK YOU NITROTITAN YOU STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM DOOM YOU SICK PIECE OF SHIT.
>>339422214
No kidding. Where's the tits?
>>339422048
no, not in this pic. he looked like a player after success. 2016 is long after the downfall of romero, and for that, he now looks like a wiser man. mature. ready to bring it once again. only the world has changed long ago.
>>339420883
>Mfw Carmack, despite being a computer wizard genius, is still a hack and gets all the undeserved credit for Doom to this day.
If anything Carmack gets undeserved hate. If I had a cent for every post shitting on him for gameplay decisions over the years, I'd be a millionaire by now. The only game whose design he kinda sorta directly influenced was Q3, which turned out great anyways
If anything he's underappreciated by millenials who can't grasp we'd live in a completely different world vidya-wise weren't for his pioneer efforts in 3D (and popularizing real-time 3D games). It's almost unimaginable, but weren't for Carmack, a lot of the 3D games everyone knows and loves might not have existed, exist in another form, have only arrived a couple of years later, etc. You wouldn't get a different panorama in vidya if you erased someone who did 3D after it was a thing, but you absolutely would if you removed the guy who pushed the boundaries and was there at the right time to strongly influence an industry
>>339422981
Carmack is love.
>>339422981
>Q3, which turned out great anyways
soulless Q1 MP clone without campaign or style with one of the most insufferable fanbases ever
one of the best engines ever made, though, so many amazing games made by actually talented people
