>Ape Escape (blown away by the controls, premise and gameplay on the first generation of 3D)

I think this is the disconnect, and why there is such an argument of "Playstation" vs. "PSX."
You might have been a fan of video games at the time, but that doesn't necessarily mean you were posting on the early internet, and reading gaming magazines.
1. If you were playing video games without these outside sources (maybe just with your friends, etc.), then you likely called it "playstation."
2. If you did take input from these outside sources, then you likely called it "PSX" - but only in the company of others who did the same. If you interact with people in category 1, you would likely say "playstation" around them.
Neither is more right than the other, nor is one more "casual" than the other. Even today, there are plenty of "hardcore" gamers who might like really obscure games - yet would refrain from posting on forums and reading game "journalism." Would we chastise them?
>>339426752

>>339425689
It's okay, the backgrounds in the game are literal FMVs playing in a loop. The plot is fun, the gameplay is extremely challenging, but I'd play it for the novelty alone. I've yet to play Retro Helix, though.

>>339427179
Oh I loved that game. It was so much, much better than I ever imagined it being.
Screenshots of it don't actually look that appealing, and I was never that big on the general theme of pirates either. But that game is a gem.
The idea of how you actually controlled your ship, and were limited to attacking left or right with turn speeds while carefully yet hastily trying to navigate the waters, was simply amazing.
I have to check and see if it's up on the Playstation network or something because I actually think I'd like to rebuy it.

>>339427848
My post is more about what people called it then. Obviously, no one was calling it the PS1 before the PS2 was announced.
I guess some PSX outliers continued to call it that for obscure hipster credibility, while everyone else called it the PS1 once PS2 was announced.

Because developers made games with fun in mind.
Now you have developers like Naughty Dog's Neil Druckman saying fun is not the goal of a game and should not be considered in development.
>>339428053
>Obviously, no one was calling it the PS1 before the PS2 was announced.
True that. But it was the PS. Or in plain speak, the Playstation.
Point being, it was never the PSX anywhere but a fraction of the time in a single reason. And nowhere else and never since.

Because back in the day it was literal "shovel"ware. Today's "shovelware" isn't on shelves, but rather the pit depths of digital platforms.
If your game was shit you wouldn't find a publisher willing to print copies of your game and ship it out to retailers everywhere.
But today you can just throw your game online no matter how shit it is.

I feel like Spyro 2 was better; each game in the trilogy as a whole is fantastic, of course, but Spyro 3 feels a bit like a downgrade from the innovations it's predecessor introduced to the series.
Small things like no cutscenes before levels to larger factors like a less memorable and intimidating villain make Year of the Dragon a little less good than Ripto's Rage, although it's still a great game.
