You can argue about likability of Togami, but at least he did things, and was adversary for big part of the game. DGR2 on the other hand killed the adversary character.
Kyouko and Chiaki filled pretty much same roles of helpers, with Chiaki being more agreeable and seemingly letting you solve more cases. Chiaki also died.
Yasuhiro and Soda filled the same niche of being idiots, and it's arguable which people like more, if either. Personally I preferred Yasuhiro, since he was played as a joke from very beginning, and Soda's infuation with Sonia turned pretty annoying.
Aoi and Akane both fill niche of being idiots and delicious brown, but Aoi was driving cause in one case, while Akane never really did much except be an idiot.
Touko and Sonia can be compared in both being non-entities, though latter is easily more agreeable. Unlike most characters, she didn't seem to have any kind of conflict going on.
Fuyuhiko isn't really amazing survivor either, but arguably best from DGR2 because rest were pretty lame.

Nekomaru because apparently he's health condition was what inspired him to get fit in the first place, so by the time when you got out of the virtual world he should be really different. That combined with his original body being destroyed could've made for pretty interesting scene.

I was part of the fan-translation team for the first game. Since the base translation for the game was done before I started working, I just played rough version of the game with everything but script in Japanese and avoided being spoiled by Climax graphics.
After completion of the first one, we shortly started on the (uncompleted) second game, and like before the main translator sent me the graphics to edit.
