Really not wise to get a 1080 now

AMD Vega could be out by October, forcing Nvidia to release the 1080 Ti early & price cut the 1080

Only if it is out by October, and only if it's competitive enough for them to release early and drop the price significantly.
>>
>Still not really 4k ready

What's the point?

The 980ti can max every game except Ark at like 100+fps, and likely will for years to come.
The 1080 still drops below 60fps on most modern games in 4k.

Its a card that doesn't need to exist. Just give it a few years for a card that can really do 4k before you go past a 980ti

Because not everyone can afford to buy the best hardware. And the 70-50 of the series are cheaper, better and more power-efficient versions of 80 of an older series. For example, you can buy the huge, bulky and power hungry 280, or you can instead get a 650 that has basically the same performance (don't quote me on that, I don't know the details), but is built with new technology, allowing it to be much smaller and power efficient.

Would be nice if developers would always have a resolution scale slider, then we get the benefits without bothering the UI.

O I am laffin

Remember how great the 780 Ti was when it came out? I remember it being the "god" card for a while like the 980 Ti was this past gen. With the latest drivers for both cards, the 290x beats it or matches it in almost every benchmark, be it 3DMark or actual in-game performance when it was the exact opposite by a fair margin when both cards first released. The 290x even launched before the 780 Ti. At launch, the 780 Ti scored 4906 in Firestrike Extreme and with the latest drivers it now pulls 4774. The 290x at launch managed 4676 and it now scores 5061 (!!!). I bet a year or two from now you'll see the 390x outperforming the 980 Ti, how the fuck can anyone deny that Nvidia is shitting all over older cards with every single WHQL release they put out just so they can sell more new cards?

Pic related, benches done recently with the latest drivers from both vendors. The story was different when these cards first launched but now the 3xx series cards are sweeping the 9xx cards at every price point except for the very high end which is a tiny percentage of the market anyways. Notice the 390 handily beating the 970 even though it only traded blows with it or was beaten by it when it first launched.

AMD cards age like fine wine, Nvidia cards like milk. I'll be laughing at the Nvidiots when Mankind Divided comes out and AMD crushes everything pre-Pascal.

Nvidia is a meme, people buy their shitty hardware for the same reason they buy Macbooks and Beats headphones.
