It's so ugly and so "busy" that I barely understood what was going on. The thing with these kinds of games is that they need to be very easy to digest visually.
You can tell exactly what you're going up against just by looking at the character and making assumptions.

Hardly their only bad choice. Everyone's already beaten to death discussion over the art direction. They tried to compete in the merch department even though their shit looks like you stuck Gumby in the Microwave. They held fast to the release date even though they knew the storm was coming.
But worst of all, they tried to charge not only $60 for the main game, but an extra $20 or so for a season pass, a season pass that if you don't buy you have to grind to unlock all the characters. The game is already full retail price, and you're expected to spend more for all the content. Meanwhile Blizzard got goodwill heaped on them for offering a lower price for the basic edition on PC while having all characters unlocked from the start for free, and future content (including maps) also being free.
The only way Battleborn could have stayed competitive is by releasing itself as F2P.

Borderlands 1 was a good first try. a sort of Diablo FPS game, with a space desert planet western thing going on, with nice cel shaded graphics.
Borderlands 2 lost the fairly decent writer, and hired Anthony Burch (who had "criticised" game writing for Destructoid, with his Rev Rants thing... which suggested he'd be good at it). Turns out Anthony can't write for shit.
Then it also turned out the Borderlands art style was stolen from another guy, by way of not paying and then pretending no dicsussion had ever happened.
then Anthony proceeded to meme up the game, and shit like hidden Minecraft ares were added
tldr: BL1 was a good start, BL2 trashed it and killed any further success.
whenever Anthony Burch talks about other writers not, he always talks about "how much better at writing" they are. This included instances for the Telltale spin-off, and Battleborn, and basically any writing project he's ever involved with since.
