I was always impressed with the animations (though not so much the intelligence) of the horses in Red Dead Redemption. They typically last long enough that you'll have grown a bond and will be sad when your horse dies, because it's pretty much guaranteed your horse will die.
On a related note, it took me a while to figure out you can actually ride your horse for too long and cause it to collapse and die of exhaustion. Didn't think they'd program that in.

I upvote this comment. I stopped playing the game cause it's boring but the horses were pretty cool. Capturing them, naming them, breeding them made me feel pretty attached. Plus all the skills it can learn/grow and different colors and shit. Best horses in a game by far.

First it sets up the "YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO FUCK THEM" rule, which creates terrible "will they, won't they" faux-drama with no payoff until the end, if at all.
And even then, either Darling will end up with the snake girl, which is boring, or he'll end up with all of them, which is stupid.
If you just split the girls up between multiple (near) identical love interests, you could have actual romantic interactions between them without having to individually develop the human boyfriends too much, and you could fully focus on the genuinely interesting parts of the series, which is the various monster cultures and their adaptation to human interaction.
