The thing is EVERYONE is being made into a stereotype. It's like if a game has slutty armor for men it gets a pass for having slutty armor for women.
Besides most countries enjoy stereotypes and it's a way to quickly establish a character, only the US and some countries in Europe care about stereotypes.
And most of them are positive stereotypes people can feel patriotic about. In short the marketing was so simple it's brilliant.
They also had several things to distract people from digging into it, like the magazine with Symmetra, Tracer's butt pose and their Overwatch porn removal, you have to be really naive as to not see those were clearly publicity stunts.
