If I'm poor is it worth buying FFXIV
ie is it a good enough mmo to pay money into at a monthly rate and never own it? I don't want to 'buy' a bad mmo and be out 20 bucks and still not have a game I can play whenever without paying more money.

P2P MMOs actually tend to offer a lot of gameplay for your money when you compare it to paying for new games all the time. Just depends on whether you'll be as satisfied grinding away in the same game for months.
No clue about the current state of FFXIV in particular, though. I used to play it and enjoy it, but I've heard bad things about the patches that came out after Heavensward.

Overall I think it's probably the best MMO out right now. It may be a bit on the slow side in combat but it lets people who were shit at WoW like me able to react to things better. It is a bit of a grind, though.

The leveling experience is alright, expansion's story is a lot better though
Try the trial. Levels 1-20 with any class are kind of boring, especially compared to the endgame (when it actually starts to require skill), but you'll get a taste of what you're in for in terms of gameplay.
Just don't go to /xivg/ unless you really like drama, ERP, and avatarfagging.
Also worth noting that you don't have to pay 15 bucks/month for a sub, you only need 13/mo for 1 char per server.

Marauder is an infinitely better tank class to play if you hate pressing just 2 buttons. Gladiator just goes from 1,2 to 1,2,3.
dont bother. leveling with the story is manageable but after the literal 50th 'run and talk to this guy, run back and talk this other guy again' quest it gets real stale real fast. and then good fucking luck leveling other jobs since you have no boring quests to do, no one is around to do fates, and you are left with waiting 10 minutes for the queue to pop just to run the same dungeon for the 30th time in a row.

Honestly I enjoyed the story, but after you get to the max level (for the vanilla game, at least) you have to go through about 100 'run here, push button, run back' quests. Only then are you allowed to move on to the expansion. I said fuck it, I bailed.
