Man and even that was 4 years ago. By beat 'em up standards, pretty much anything post-90s is "recent." It's depressing.

Anyway the Scott Pilgrim game was actually pretty good in spite of the comic and movie being shit.

The Dishwasher games are good hack 'n' slash style beat 'em ups.

I don't play meme games.

I used to play 2d beu a lot but haven't in a long time, and have not much interest in doing so. The problem for me is how stagnant they are.

I think this is because of the perspective. It doesn't allow for very different (gameplay wise) levels, and enemy patterns are also quite boring, most of them being "get near and hit you in the face with a melee attack".

Compare it to Doom, for example. You can have thousands of different feeling user made maps, and that's without modding enemies and weapons.

I think a small change in perspective could solve this. If the camera was moved up and rotated down, so it looked more like an isometric or topdown game, you would have a whole plane for stage hazards and variations, enemy attacks, evasion, etc, so you could effectively make it much more varied and deep.

Thoughts?

Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds is somewhat fun. It would be much more fun if 5pb would actually release this goddamn online mode.
Grief Syndrome is nice too, and after jumping few hoops it's playable over internet.
Fairy Bloom Freesia also comes to mind, but it's arena-based, no real levels.
All three will trigger anime-haters hard though.

Hm... Well, Guacamelee! maybe, but it's more metroidvania then beat'em'up, yes.

>Belt Scroller

/vr/ here. I just came into this thread to explain this shit for those of you who aren't familiar with the meme.

"Belt scrolling game" is what the genre is referred to as in Japan (because you move right a little, fight, move right a little more, fight again, move right again, and on and on like a conveyor belt). Trolls on /vr/ have started using the term to piss people off and derail threads. The meme is BY FAR the worst thing /vr/ has ever produced.
>>

Character rankings. Only listing games that I can 1cc.

>Final Fight (arcade version, of course)
Haggar > Cody = Guy
inb4 "Haggar has no infinite!" He does have one. Even without it, he's the best by far. He just has the highest learning curve. You have to get used to awkward things like not being able to grab immediately after a throw and a few different boss strategies from the other two, and completely change your playing style but once you do... Haggar is one of the most destructive characters ever in a beat'em up. Guy is supremely underrated. Best hit box when it comes to pipe and sword. Best mobility. Accelerated wall jump (different from normal wall jump) is fucking good. Learn to use barrels and trashcans for wall jumping. Cody is #1 for beginning to above-medium players, but once you reach a high level then Haggar is #1 by far and Guy is easily as good as Cody (except in like 1-2 sections in the last level).

>Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
Mess = Mustapha > Jack > Hannah
Pretty self-explanatory. I'm tempted to make Mess > Mustapha because Mustapha has the worst throw in the game (enemies thrown further is bad because makes your wake ups harder to do) but Mustapha is still too damn good. Jack is actually good contrary to popular belief. Hannah is pure garbage. All her hit boxes are garbage and she gets hit out of things when you shouldn't. Her down-up attack is pointless because the brunt of the damage is off the last hit, yet if you combo into it from a normal combo or from grapples then you won't connect with the last hit making you do worse damage than a normal combo or throw.
>>
There was a good beat em up for the PSP

>Golden Axe
Gillius > Tyris > Ax-Battler
If you're doing nothing but dash kicks with Tyris then mmm that's spending too much time. Better to just stab everyone in the neck with Gillius's rolling attack.

>Golden Axe II (Genesis)
Gillius > Ax-Battler > Tyris
Tyris is garbage in this game. Gillius is good as ever, and Ax-Battler is way improved and has the best spell in the game (the one where he tosses enemies) because it sets up easy infinites.

>Streets of Rage 1
Blaze > Axel > Adam
Self-explanatory. One interesting thing to note is that Axel has faster vertical movement than Blaze.

>Streets of Rage 2
Max = Axel > Skate > Blaze
Self-explanatory. I hope there aren't people that still think that Blaze is better than Skate because she's not.

>Alien vs. Predator
Warrior > Lynn = Hunter > Dutch
I'm tempted to make Lynn equal with Warrior because if you get the hang of her gun then you can cheese the entire game and get a safer 1cc than with Warrior... but Warrior is still the best. He's invulnerable during his diving spear attack. Dutch is garbage.

>Violent Storm
Wade = Boris > Kyle
Kinda stupid but one of the most important things is getting bonus lives. Wade and Boris get the most bonus lives by far because Wade's uppercut and Boris's certain throw gives tons of points. Boris has the easiest time cheesing bosses.

>Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara
Cleric = Magic-user > Fighter > Elf = Dwarf > Thief

>Golden Axe: Revenge of Death-Adder
Trix > Dora > Stern > Goah
Trix has the fastest attacks, best movement, best recovery, dash attack is ridiculous and can infinite anything against a wall. Healing of course. Dora's jumping dive attack (not talking about downward stab) is ridiculous. Stern is decent but can't hit downed enemies with his jumping dive attack. Goah struggles with multiple enemies.

>Captain America
Iron Man = Vision > Hawkeye > Captain
Jumping diagonal beams own everything. Iron Man's beam might have a wider hit box than Vision's beam. No diagonal beam then not as good. Hawkeye's last hit of his combo has invulnerability. Otherwise Hawkeye and Captain are the suck.

>Ninja Baseball Bat-Man
Green > everyone
Green's hidden move (jump then up down jump) is the best move in the game but just as good is his recovery tornado move. Those two things are broken. The others are good but nowhere as good as green.

>Ninja Warriors Again (SNES)
Ninja > Kamaitachi > Kunoichi
Ninja is powerful as fuck. So much crowd-clearing ability. So much invulnerability frames after throws. So much reach. Ridiculously good. Kamaitachi is also damn good once you get good at doing his throws. Kunoichi is garbage pretty much.

>Guardians / Denjin Makai 2
Girulian = Skullbyule > Jinrei > Rou = Tulks = P.Belva > Kurokishi = Zeldia
All the guys are good, the girls are horrible though.

>Battle Circuit

>>
>>339336503
It's bait, anon
>>
>>339337069

Bait indeed, but it's also true.

Maybe because i always loved the concept of fighting several enemies at once, but 2D beat 'em ups had very little animations, you couldn't block attacks in most of them (at least the ones i played) and i'm not a fan of 2D games since i tasted 3D. Rocksteady gave me everything i always asked for a beat 'em up. They even included in the same package a stealth game, my other favorite vidya genre.
>>
>>339338282
>you couldn't block attacks in most of them

Because you're supposed to move out of the way.

That's like complaining that you can't shield in SHMUPS.

Can you block in Mario?

Don't think of beat'em ups as fighting games.
>>
>>339339132

Well, i don't see how having a "cooler" way to avoid attacks than moving around could hurt a 2D beat 'em up.
>>
>>339332653
They get all the tropes over and done with within the first ~10 episodes, then shit gets real.

It's good, but Fourze's still my favourite.
