>That feeling when even the most minor error makes you feel like you completely fuck up your new build
Why is building a PC so fucking scary? Even after 10+ years I'm still always scared.
>>
thats why i just take it to a MicroCenter and let them build it.
>>
i installed my cpu fan unit the wrong way round and i can't be bothered to re-seat it..
>>
>>339296042
It's not scary
Pc components are pretty robust
>>
It's really not difficult. Everything plugs in a certain way. Of course stupid mistakes like forgetting standoff screws happens all the time but it's really become totally casualized in the last decade.

Computers are pretty tough and really just "insert A into B" level of stupid. But because of the cost of things and how you can do minor stupid stuff like >>339296380 It always makes me scared for even the smallest things. Just finished my build and I mistook the PSU screws with the Motherboard screws. I replaced them fast but man I felt really stupid.

I had a lot of fun. it wasn't that scary building mine.
I only had two problems. One was when i realized i forgot to buy the wifi adapter and spent like 2 hours gettin mad as fuck thinkin the OS didn't install right
The other problem was that literally everything came with an instruction manual except the PSU, so I had to look things up online about where the cables go. I probably could have guessed, but I didn't want to start plugging shit in wrong and risk wrecking the build.
>>
>>339296412
If there were any less worthwhile bait than this, you'd owe me money.

>>339296656
but that's dumb the thing i suggested just means you take it apart and start over with the proper standoffs. it just won't boot if theres a short like that and no damage is done.

It's only scary if you don't understand what is happening.

anon please

You know whats scary, spending a ton on 6 7950s to mine virtual coins with, building a custom frame for them out of wood and listening to them give off more noise than a vacuum cleaner while heating up the room they are in to 30 °C
Then one random day on a random restart seeing a memory chip on one card glow white hot and then everything smelling like burnt shit and plastic, thinking its just about to take your entire investment with it

but I made a solid profit
even warrantied the burnt card
and in the end it was pretty fun
>>
>>339298216
Give yourself a few hours at least first time. There's every chance something/s will crop up that you'll have to go troubleshoot. People like to underestimate the time it can take when really they should be doing the opposite.
>>
>>339296042
What is so scary about it?
You just put shit in slots, don't even have to solder or wire shit together.
>>
Building a PC is far from difficult, just don't do stupid shit like I did when building for my first time. When I put my PC together I didn't install my CPU heatsink before mounting my motherboard to the case. I had one hell of a fucking time trying to get my 212 EVO to mount to the motherboard. I should have just taken it out and installed it that way, but I was too lazy. I eventually got it, but holy fuck was that annoying. My CPU temps are usually fine, but the other day I reinstalled Speccy for the first time in forever and my CPU temps are fluctuating within a 5 degree difference like crazy. I think it's just Speccy being retarded, since Windows 10 fucks with Piriform software pretty hard, but I might go take apart everything and give it a heavy duty dusting and remount the heatsink.

Would it help if I build my PC while dressed as a girl?

You kids have it so fucking easy these days.

These days they're a FUCKING DREAM, like, Screwless everything, Colour Coded slots and plugs, Its hard to fuck one up. Cable management is already thought out and they've built it into the case. No more fucking SATA cables. I LOVE THE FUTURE

Slotting in the RAM was always the cringe part for me,
Its not going in, Did i put it in the wrong way? No its got that little tab there its gotta fit this way.... is it the right type of ram? Yeah yeah thats fine. I guess just push a little more.

Their use is pretty self explanatory, you have a case with a metal sheet with holes in it, and you want to put a circuitboard onto it - probably not a good idea to just screw it right onto the conducting metal, right?

Is anything wrong if it has too much power supplied? I mean, as long as I supply something to motherboard, then there is seperate CPU one, two for GPU... and I think I need to connect fan controller where I have all the fans on.

I mean it as the cooler is a bit big, so it might clash with the RAM position since RAM is also a bit big (sadly it is not a plain one).

Poor phrasing on my part. Too many will simply get in the way and reduce air flow. Cable management is a bitch. Too few means you can't hook up everything you want like multiple hard drives or you can't deliver enough power to your graphics card. If you can't either your computer won't start, will give you a black screen or a loud beep to tell you you fucked up. No harm just go back and double check. I wouldn't worry about it, the real pain is the front panel connectors. Tiny as shit and they're one connector so you feel like you could bend them with your pinky. Read y our motherboard manual closely (or go without front panel connectivity, no big).

Problem with prebuild is they use shitties parts. Sure they advertize GTX 1080 in the case! But it is in fact the shittiest version you can find. My girlfriend and I both have GTX 660 in our old PCs, but mine was bought seperately for custom build and it was good, while hers is weaker and constantly overheats due to only 1 small fan.

Plus shit CPU cooling, shit motherboard, shit cable management, shit case. Even if you buy one marketed as GAMING PC with everything top notch they will jew you out somehow.

By the time you rebuild a whole new rig, the technology has become slightly different enough to feel new.

I know it's a heatsink, but after having to put on like, a dozen over the last ten years all of them have been a different animal. The old AMD's were a nightmare of having to put heavy pressure on one side to get the thing to pop in.

These days it's all levers and shit, so it works out alright.

It's been so long since it happened, but I inherited a computer from my grieve that started doing random restarts. I decided to renew the thermal paste that has probably been there 8 years.

In trying to pull off the heatsink, the whole cpu came out and I ended up with 3 bent pins.

It might have been my fault, or it might have not been seated correctly in the first place. But it sucked.
So now every time I change the cpu or reapply thermal paste I get super spooked, even though nothing bad has happened since then.

Done about 7 builds plus hundreds of repairs for businesses, honestly as long as you are gentle with shit in desktops that shit is durable. Now, I am still nervous with CPU installation and heatsinks, but otherwise it isn't too bad.

Laptops on the other hand? The worst shit will always be keyboard repairs, since the little tab of plastic holding the cable in place is the most fragile shit in the world, and it can easily wreck your entire day if you break one or someone brings one in already broken. There are tricks you can do to repair it or use "replacements", but it is tricky.
>>
>>339302406
>Problem with prebuild is they use shitties parts.

Yeah I came to realize this in time. I also don't like how people always pick the cheapest parts to "prove" how cheap it is to build you own. Jack the price up another $75 and buy real shit.

it's better to build a PC that's too cheap rather than one that's too expensive. Worst case if you build one that's not powerful enough is that you can't play some games at the highest settings, but even the shittiest computer can do 90% of what people use computers for besides gaymen.

Also, avoid AMD cpus. I'm not saying this because I want to start a war, but because if you DO decide to switch, the AMD cpus that are likely in your price range have different chipsets than intel cpus so you'll need to buy a new motherboard too if you switch.

Fans aren't really expensive. It's full tower (really big box), all parts are screwed in and interchangeable, lots of cable management options, lots of supported motherboards, really easy to build PC in, all places where fans are have dust collectors which you can clean (and nothing can come into PC while still having great airflow). This was from February of last year, mind you:

Case - Logic Supply MC600
Mobo - Asus H97I Plus
CPU - Intel i5 4690K
GPU - Gigabyte Mini-ITX GTX 970
PSU - HDPLEX 250W + Voodoo Firebird 350w Power brick
RAM - 8GB Crucial Ballistix Very Low Profile DDR3
SSD - Transcend MTS800 256GB

I'm sure that they'll make a tiny 1070 that uses even less power than the 970.

Yes it is. You screw down gradually and do the opposite screw before you move around. Literally everything that has screws.
>What else do you even screw down that way?
Everything. Opposites, moron.
>>
>>339303631
literally every youtube tutorial tells you that
>>
>>339305161
oh i got it working, it was just frustrating as hell

>Start with a humble 6300+R7 260X build
>Runs pretty well
>970 comes out
>Buy one
>Buy a 4690K to stop the bottlenecking
>Buy a 390 to avoid the 3.5 meme
>Seriously considering buying a 1070
Guys how do I stop the power hunger
>>
>>339305551
bad time to build now, new cards very soon which means old ones cheaper
>>
>>339305579
Stock coolers are always shit. If you're happy with shit, knock yourself out.

>>339305540

but seriously, answer my question. Im genuinely curious what common thing you screw down that way that would prepare you for screwing down a cpu cooler

surely you could name something if its so common
>>
>>339305579
if it comes with a stock you don't need anything more since the unlocked ones don't come with sock coolers, aftermarket coolers are for over clocking
>>
>>339305551
Just get intel 3 skylake and overclock that shit. or go i7.
>>
>>339305583
Stop buying mediocre components.
>>
>>339305579
>ignoring thermal paste

I hope that doesn't mean any.

stock cooler does the job if you are not OCing - but it whirrs on like 6000 rpms and sounds like a jet engine while gaming.
Just buy a good cooler ,plenty of cheap shit around 212 evo
