The Medic twist is the definition of a great idea that's poorly executed.

It would've been so much better if they revealed the Medic's identity halfway through and had him undergo an existential crisis.

That would have been at odds with Venom being what he is, though. He's a vacant shell for the player to project onto in Big Boss's image. An existential crisis would have imposed character on him he was deliberately designed not to have.

Without that, it would just be a dumb Big Boss doppelganger story. Not that what we got isn't also pointless and stupid, but I'm not sure what you're suggesting would have really been any better.

I suppose that's fair. Just ending the game with it was a poor choice, they could have done a lot more.
>>
>>339292874
It's true that the Medic was designed to be a blank slate, but in the context of the MGS universe, that was BB's doing.

They could've easily pulled a Raiden and had Venom slowly display his own personality after he finds out the truth. At least then we'd have SOME interesting conflict.
>>
>>339291661
>>339291661
Shut the fuck up
>>
>>339293328
Raiden had personality from the beginning, though. My point is that the only reason Venom exists is to give the player "Big Boss" without stepping on player agency and creating dissonance. You're asking for something that wasn't even on their radar to do. They could have, sure, but that's an entirely different ballgame than what MGSV was made to be.
>>
>>339293725
Sometimes I hate when video games do artsy stuff like this at the detriment of the story.
>>
>>339294448
Kojima has never given a shit about internal consistency or logic. Theme and examining the nature of video games themselves has always been more interesting for him.

If youre just catching on now you werent paying attention.
>>
>>339293328

Raiden was arguably about throwing off others' control of him, including the intent to turn him into Snake v1.2. Venom seems implicitly pretty okay with the whole arrangement, since he doesn't break the charade.

>>
>>339294448
That's my point though; Venom's role in the story is peripheral compared to his role as the player's avatar in the game itself. I don't think it's especially "artsy." I can understand why you might want a good story revolving around an identity crisis, but all MGSV wanted to be was a sandbox with "Big Boss" with stupid fanservice like Preteen Liquid and Quiet's tits. The entire game amounts to very little in the greater canon, and I don't think that's an accident.

I don't mind when some of his choices to drive the nature of video games (I thought having Raiden fill in for Snake was a great way to explain why you have to go through old things again, yada yada) but this one just messed with me.

Hell, I feel like you could have still had the revelation had have a crisis of identity while still maintaining the same overall idea. You think you're playing as one character but then you're actually playing as someone else. Does that change how you behave towards the other characters?

Or something like that.

>>339294941

>>
>>339295341
>But there's a reason she's dressed like that

I dont care about fanservice but Quiet's design is both unaesthetically pleasing and has nothing to do with her actual character. Quiet's ACTUAL role in the story is her relationship with Venom constructed as a bond without words and taking it away the first time she speaks to him, causing a Phantom Pain in both Venom and the player. The plant stuff is just an excuse to have Joosten in her underwear.

Face it, Kojima just wanted a naked fanservice character and then wrote reasons for it later.
>>

Its funny, because the Paz sidequest is EXACTLY what your describing. Its Venom's identity crisis as his real and constructed memories clash with each other combined with his own guilt for not finding the 2nd bomb

Again, you are saying this because its wholly different from a typical metal gear story. Its a series of episodic vignettes about how words shape identity, culminating in a normie is forced into the role of Big Boss (the player) through suggestion and then builds his legend through playing the game instead of "muh cinematic game"

>>
>>339297475
>Again, you are saying this because its wholly different from a typical metal gear story.
I say this because it's boring and lazily written. Skullface's motivations and plans are nonsensical and are an application of the game's thematic content in a heavy-handed and simplistic way that makes even Liquid's obsession over his genetic makeup seem nuanced, Venom's a very boring self-insert, Ocelot exists to do mostly nothing, Kaz is limited to just being grumpy, Eli's inclusion in the game feels like tacked on fanwank (as does Mantis's and certainly Volgin's), and this is completely ignoring the various awkward ways the game fits into the greater continuity. Even on its own terms TPP is a dull mess story-wise. It has its merits, but the story and the presentation of said story aren't part of them.
>>
>>339297870

Big Boss actively escorts Venom through a hospital using various people as shields. Even if didn't devise the plan--Zero and Ocelot did--he was more than a little complicit. He keeps Venom around as his lacky for over ten years, so he couldn't have had severe qualms about it even if he was initially hesitant.

MGS has never had subtle villains.

>Venom's a boring self insert

Being a self insert is part of the point as Kojima, like Mgs2, wanted to examine the relationship between player amd avatar. If you dont like it, fine, but thats just your opinion man.

>Ocelot is boring Kaz is grumpy

Ill give you Ocelot but Kaz is great. Hes not a happy go lucky womanizer like in PW but he has enough moments of warmth and levity to keep him from just being a sadsack.

>Eli, Mantis, Volgin

All three fit into the theme of Revenge. Eli and Volgin are pursuing pointless revenge against someone who isnt even their real target. Mantis channels that revenge.

You cant seriously tell me their inclusions here are worse than "dude i was pretending to live in his arm lol" or Mantis pure fanservice "dude remember my boss fight in MGS1" appearance?

Two potential answers

1. He brainwashed himself to believe Venom was Boss and that damaged his personality.

2. The game did Ocelot absolutely no justice and it could have just been any other character from Big Boss' past instead.
>>
>>339299962
option 2, because Ocelot obviously knows who Venom is
>>
>>339300113
They say in the tapes that Ocelot brainwashed himself. Kaz was the only one who knew, which is part of the reason he hates Big Boss in Metal Gear.
>>

>>
>>339300113
Ocelot, after the hospital escape, brainwashes himself to believe Venom is the real Big Boss but has an unexplained trigger so he can eventually remember the Truth.

He genuinely believes Venom is the real deal for most of the game.

>MGS has never had subtle villains.
Correct. But Skullface's plot is heavy-handed and thematically dull even for Metal Gear.
>Being a self insert is part of the point
It is. That doesn't mean it made for a good story, though.
>Kaz is great
His shift in disposition feels natural and true, but his actual role in the story is mostly being Mr. No Fun aside from his initial rumination on loss. He, like Ocelot, is mostly an info dump. That would be fine if there was dynamism elsewhere, but there isn't.
>All three fit into the theme of Revenge
In a very contrived way, yes. They tie into it, but not in a way that's thoughtful. Mantis in particular is superficial. Volgin is much the same. In Eli's case it feels like natural resentment toward the abandonment (and role of) of a parent, but we already had all that in MGS1. MGSV didn't provide much more to chew on.

Liquid being brought back in MGS2 was stupid, and Psycho Mantis in MGS4 was even more stupid, but that doesn't make MGSV any less stupid. MGSV's failures are on MGSV.
>Kojima has never cared about continuity and neither should you
If that were true each game would be wholly new instead of overtly revisiting characters and events. The post-game timelines are a concrete distillation of this. What you're suggesting is Kojima trying to have his cake and eat it too.
>>
>>339295584
Bravo
>>
>>339299664
He still went through with it. He's the one that ensured the plan's success. He's as guilty as Ocelot.
>>
>>339300483
>A basic point of story telling is structure

You are basing this on literature and film which are uninteractive mediums. Video games are different. The interactivity of a game is its own unique language like how film has cinematography. Id much rather Kojima tell a story about the nature of player and avatar than some generic revenge plot to satisfy people's autistic obsessions with a fictional timeline.

Fucking MGS2 ended with Snake telling you that whether events "actually happened" in a fictional medium doesnt matter and whats important is the message and the experiences you had playing the game, idiot.
>>
>>339296197

It's really not as hard as it sounds to come up with bullshit reasons for stupid shit. Most people don't because the explanation often ends up more insulting to the viewer's intelligence than the actual stupid shit, which (some joking aside) is often just taken as something the viewer shouldn't think about too hard.

Sure, but a lot of them are relatively minor or justify themselves in intrigue. Starting with MGS4 (or Portable Ops, if you want to count it) the series started to contrive explanations and scenarios that are outright jarring and undermining. Snake being Big Boss's clone is totally unsupported by MG2, but it doesn't really contradict it either (Big Boss telling Snake he's his father makes the most sense to have occurred in MG2, but it actually could have happened at any time). MGS2 fits naturally enough, and while MGS3 retcons back story from the MSX games and even a line from MGS2 it is pretty minor detailing with little effect on the greater structure of events. MGS4 onward fit awkwardly in a way reminiscent of the Star Wars prequels.

I think you missed the enitre point of MGS2 senpai

The hivemind sure makes it seem that way.

But it does. It's a very weird game, but all the characters and their motivations and the general plot follow MGS1 in a fluid way, even if the game also includes a lot of meta-narrative elements. The core conflict is a follow-up on Ocelot's post-credits conversation. If the game totally disregarded MGS1 it wouldn't be as effective as it is, "senpai."

The events of MGS1 are used to subvert player expectations of a metal gear sequel and provide commentary on the nature of games themselves

You are seeing MGS as a documentary of fictional events and not as a complete video game.

That they've done twice already, you goddamn sycophant. Why does kojima still have oblivious fans in [current year]? Have they no self respect?

what the hell was kojima smoking over at konami HQ?

Sure are. But MGS2 still works fluently as a sequel in a literal plot sense, even if it's structured in a way that subverts expectations in terms of structure and content. This isn't hard to understand. There isn't a contradiction there.
>You are seeing MGS as a documentary
No, you're just failing to understand that emphasizing one thing in analysis doesn't mean I think thematic ideas elsewhere don't exist. I'm very aware of what MGS2 does. It's my favorite game in the series, along with Metal Gear 2 and Ghost Babel.

FOB is pretty good

Is Ghost Babel worth a playthrough?

Yes. One of my favorites, but if you like MG2 or MGS1 it's more or less like them.

I feel like I was the only one suprised by the act 2 popping up. It didn't quite all add up because I hadn't seen a ton of stuff that was in the trailer but it still felt like such a natural ending I was was shocked when I saw only a portion of the game was complete. Anyone else feel like that?

I feel that is a few additional months had been spent on MGS5, it could have gone from good to great.

Could have fleshed out the final arc and made a real ending.

Could have actually made mother base something really cool. As it is, it is awesome to look at, but that's it. Walking around, it feels dead. Why not add some NPCs you can talk to? Why not create a few "quests" on the base to drive the story? All you can do it drive around and watch soldiers salute you.

They spent a large budget building up the game... and if they had spent 5% more it could have been improved 30%. Really odd choice to release early just to monetize and yet liquidate a good part of the brand's value. If they had just spent a few more months and made a really great game, they would have a platform that they could milk for years to come. REALLY odd choice.

Telling that the biggest complaints of the game have nothing to do with the gameplay
>>
>>339309192
People have made plenty of complaints about the gameplay though. Namely balance and mission variety and/or level design.

nice meme list.

Just because every mission isn't a long scripted hallway doesn't mean the game is bad

Nice meme post. Feel free to explore the many MGSV threads in an archive. There are things the game does well, but there are legitimate reasons someone might dislike it and plenty of people have talked at length about it. You're still allowed to enjoy something even if other people have problems with it, you know.
