People forget that GZ's and TPP make MGSV, not just TPP.

This in mind, was MGSV a disappointment?
>>
as a part of the overall story and what's supposed to be the final chapter that blends everything together?
yes.

the gameplay is top-notch, though.
>>
I was disappointed of MGSV. GZ was a nice game though. Would've loved to see more bases like Camp Omega in MGSV.
>>
>>339274664
Counting GZ and TPP as one game doesn't change anything.
MGSV still started off great, and quickly became complete dog shit.
>>
>>339274664

I love TPP and GZ was pretty good.

If these are "one game" why did I have to pay a total of $100 for it?

Why did TPP have a tutorial at the start if I already knew the controls from GZ?

I don't have buyers remorse for either and I fucking adore TPP from a gameplay standpoint but I disagree with this.

Yes, because GZ was completely different to how TPP is. And thank fucking god for that.

What difference does that make? GZ is just a raindrop in the ocean that is TPP

the $40 ten minutes of gameplay GZ had offered better level design that 90% of TPP.

TPP had way too little content for such a big, long game, so they filled it with huge amounts of padding like repetitive missions, 50 different iterations of the same 3 missions, and the base system because normies love grinding the same menial tasks over and over again for hours if it means unlocking a slightly more powerful version of their assault rifle.

MGSV was the only game in the series with perfect controls, yet ironically its the second worst game in the series
>>
>>339275275
It's not supposed to be 5.
>>
I wasn't delusional enough to expect anything incredible after 4 and PW, and GZ just lowered my expectations for TPP even further.

So no, not really. It was alright.
>>
Its a great game with a lacking story.
Initially I didnt have much trouble with the story either, aside from the lack of strong boss characters and fights. It wasnt until I realised that chapter 30 wasnt the beginning of the final arc of the game, but rather the final true mission of the game that it started to dawn on me what a botchjob the story was. Until the end I hoped that some twist would come, Skull face would survive and the story would keep going, but instead act 2 came a long, which ironically made it much worse since it was so strange and stitched together. Unresolved plot lines, nonsensical missions and the final slap in the face with the discovery that you never played as Big boss at all ruined it completely.

My theory is that the fallout between Kojima and Konami prevented them from finishing the game properly and Kojima, sensing that MGSV wasnt a satisfying conclusion to the Big Boss saga decided on the "Venom snake" plot twist late in development. In the end we have a weird filler game which looks and plays excellent, but has almost no tie ins to the MGS lore at all, aside from some things with cypher and Liquid.

For me personally it was a disappointment, yeah.

GZ was an awesome prologue. The main mission really felt like Metal Gear Solid for me. Especially liked the Camp Omega map and even the side missions were great and diverse. In addition, Skullface really felt like a threat and the whole game had a kind of mystery to it.

But then we got TPP. The first few hours were fun. The mysterious hospital sequence, rescuing Kaz, doing some side missions until the Quiet and Huey missions, that was all fun. But then the story just went nowhere, nothing really happened. Most of the 'main missions' were useless filler missions and the side missions were insulting. Both the main and the side missions in Ground Zeroes were so much better and showed how the game should've been in the end. That fillershit could've been bearable, though, if the ending really was the concluding sendoff to the franchise, but the second half of the game was even weaker than the first half and left me disappointed during the credits.

I think TPP would've been much better if they ditched the Open World and focused on a few big maps similar to Camp Omega and also focused on fewer, but much better and more diverse side missions instead.

>>
>>339277270
Well, Kojima had something planned for Camp Omega and the singleplayer, but for whatever reason it didn't make it into the final game.

On PC, the Ground Zeroes folder gets updated with your TPP save every time you quit the game.

They shouldve made the base building a bit more distinct, with less departments, fewer resources and more direct feedback on the decisions you make. The number of guns and upgrades is pretty overwhelming too, which is a good and a bad thing.

Played the fuck out of GZ, put 11 hours into it and had a blast doing so. Then there was a decent gap before TPP dropped and I did buy it at release. I've only put like 8 hours into it and I am barely anywhere, it's fun but I don't know I just fell off it.

I'll get back on it eventually but I regret the money I spent in the mean time, even if I did get it for a decent price not too far after release.
>>
I'm watching the gameplay demos from 2014 right now and it's kind of nuts how much they toned down or had to scrap before the release.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bv-5EbCI0OA

A lot of weird emphasis too. Like how they're constantly showing off the Phantom Cigar. Apparently you were originally supposed to be vaping trees during the gameplay, constantly switching day to night and back, but in the end you never use it for anything because you can simply deploy during whatever is your preferred time and not fuck around with that mechanic.
>>
>>339278213
This, I prefer a map full of hidden stuff that you couldn't find on one go with possible side approaches (unlike metal gear 3 which was a YOU MUST GO THROUGH THIS PATH ONLY) instead of a lifeless open world with reused assets

There looked to be a bigger focus on patrol times and a larger amount of guards in the bases, which would've incentivize sneaking in between shifts. But now there's barely any guards so there's no reason to bother with that.

It's too bad Kojima didn't realize he had constraints to work with like he did for GZ. The missions felt more unique in GZ, and there were those fun joke missions too. And of course both were lacking in TPP.

It probably would've been better without being open world, or at least not so huge.

I actually like the story of the game itself but agree that it's a poor wrap up of the entire franchise's story. It feels more like a stand-alone game rather than the conclusion to the franchise.
>>
>>339277165
the V is a visual metaphor for a myriad of things

>a nuclear explosion
>conflict
>the initial chain of conflict that leads to war
>the meeting point of two people becoming one (Venom/Naked Snake)
>the mirror in the Truth ending
>Ocelot and Big Boss at the end of Truth going their separate ways
>the link between the artist and the viewer (in this case Kojima and the player) it's like an alchemical symbol for the game itself
>>
>>339282675

MGS4 was more of a conclusion to the franchise. MGSV is more like the conclusion of Big Boss as a protagonist and his side of the story.

that was why i was so excited about the idea of a game about The Boss. urban infiltration of Nazi controlled cities during WWII. it would have been a real step forward for the franchise which hasn't done anything like that before. the closest thing was chapter 3 of MGS4 but there were no interiors. chapter 1 was pretty close but interiors were pretty sparse, and it was a fucking war zone.
