The gameplay is of course very different, and you have less opportunity to roleplay through dialogue - your choices are usually either "do X" or "tell me about Y". You don't have multiple ways to ask the same thing like in Fallout.
That said, you have multiple ways to solve most problems, and the writing is generally good (if a fair bit sillier than Fallout New Vegas). I love the hell out of it, for my money.

the Sniper's Nest you can find in the mountainside overlooking Cottonwood Cove makes for a great shack to live in/fast travel to, and comes with lots of metal boxes to store your loot, plus comfy scenery.

For better or worse, Hoover Dam (and be extension Vegas) is the one and only magic bullet that can get NCR out of the shit it's in right now. They tried to get a version working in the ingame engine, but Bethesda's Gamebryo shit they were working with kept bugging out and looked far too awkward, so they had to scrap it late in development and get someone to render a new one.
At least it only takes up a small amount of time, and the music/dialogue make up for the uncanny faces.
