Smite just took LoL and changed the camera and controls and then mildly simplified a few other things like the itemization system.

A team comp would be more like "We want 2-3 big fat guys to stand in front of our hard carries" or "let's all pick disengage and long range nuke champions and be massive faggots" or "let's pick 4 exceptional aoe champions and one split pusher". Nobody said it was, it's a lane layout.
One tanky/sustainy character, a jungler, a bursty assassin/mage, a specifically ranged (not melee!) carry, and a hard support is a team comp, and Riot forces that too.

Some champions are blatantly better than others, and if you want to rank stick with the OP ones unless you want to lose.
Don't try to be a special snowflake. Pick Graves, Fizz, Ekko, Vi, Swain, *HAHAHA Splat*, Janna, and the others. Look for the permabans, honestly, and whenever they fail to ban them, pick them, otherwise the enemy will.
