Level design as a major gameplay element started to really die off around 2005ish. The 'realistic shooter' with regen health kinda killed it off completely.

Yeah, it's amazing how they put tons of optional stuff along the level making you make sense of the architecture if you want a powerup. I have never played Unreal before so it reminds me a lot of Tomb Raider at times. Very quaint alien world, great atmosphere.
