Because they actually deserved it. While the other conferences were full of SPORTS SPORTS and TV SOCIAL MEDIA, the Treehouse strims were actually about vidya gaems.
I don't even give a fuck about Nintendo or have any of their systems and I still enjoyed it.
Their last E3 was shit though, and this year is looking pretty stale as well.

There's a likelyhood that this E3 will have the mid console announcements and a bunch of games that aren't going to come to their new console, they don't want it to be that E3 where they revealed their new console only to have several announcements made for exclusives on their competitors consoles.

Also as has been speculated by a bunch of youtubers, they're wanting to capture the Japanese market again after losing a strong foothold. As it stands, E3 isn't popular in Japan, and Nintendo lost a lot of ground this last gen to the PlayStation brand and mobile. NX is likely to be something the Japanese will embrace first and foremost
NX will likely be revealed from inside Japan at some point in September, or January if they're determined not to further undermine WiiU sales in the holidays for the West
