I'm at the Mushroom Rock and I really don't know what to do with Kimahri sphere grid-wise. I got him steal and use from Rikku's part of the grid, but I am at a loss beyond that. It seems no matter where I send him, he'll just be a worse version of another character.
Is there a way to make him good, or at least have a niche use ?

That's literally his whole thing. I mean, blue magic and all, but you can't sit around using a useless character while his limit bar fills up.
Just accept that he's shitkind of like the game isand don't bother. There is a fight where you are forced to use him alone, but the boss level scales, so no worries. You can literally never level him up and be fine.
I think Kimahri might be one of the worst FF party members of all time, in terms of usefulness relative to other party members in the same game.

He's actually pretty decent. His overdrives are among the strongest up until the end of the game, since they're up against useless trash like element reels and fury. You can oneshot most random encounters with stone breath, and there's a few other ronso rages that are good for bosses. Plus his base stats are great; he's makes a better Wakka than Wakka does for most of the game.
He's not amazing but I have no idea why everyone shits on him. Pretty stupid meme tbqh

Wakka can do ranged attacks sure, but so can lulu and lulu's ranged attacks are WAY stronger than wakka's until end game.
Wakka can't actually do more damage than Kimahri during that game because Wakka doesn't have piercing.
If Kimahri travels down Wakka's path he can also debuff, what's your point?

Auron's weap limits his damage to way less than 99,999 when he's at full health so you must use a custom weapon or deal with it. Kimahri has a not very useful Overdrive and can't reliably multi hit with it.

aauron is the 4th best character for endgame, his use is confined to rechanrge overdrives for others. At the same spot goes Yuna, which, however strong, is used as meatshield with Aeons. The main party in endgame will be always Tidus, Wakka and Rikku
Lulu and Kimahri are completely useless. The endgame is defined solely by the strenght of the overdrives

He really does. Put him down Wakka's path and he hits harder, has MUCH more MP and the ability to restore it, and has better overdrives. He also has access to some pretty powerful equipment throughout the course of the main story, namely the armlet in kilika and the lance in bevelle. Wakka's insane accuracy is mostly wasted, so I'd rather have the extra MP, defense, and free healing.

as already said. The utility of a character in endgame depends on his Ultimate. Auron is shit but that irrelevant, because his ultimate is used as a second "gas tank" for the main party, so you can spam multiple ultimates before recharging them.

Last time I played I picked Expert grid and made Kimahri grab Yuna's early white magic and go down Lulu's path until he got second tier elemental spells, teleported him to Wakka and used a black magic sphere to get Demi. Makes him adequately versatile.
