Well, the thing is that items aren't as THAT important in this game. You get small to medium perks but the base weapon and dmg is the same. Faster reload, heal and so on are pretty good but you can absolutely do Cata with greens and blues or even whites if you got gud.
Also use class trinkets.
I played two sessions today and they both crashed before reaching the end of the level.

The game sold around 300k copies the first week or something and the devs said that it exceeded their expectations and basically saved the studio and gave them enough ressources to support the game for years.
So now that it's more than 600k (and will be even more after this weekend) I'm pretty sure it can be considered very successful.

That depends on a difficulty. I play on nightmare and always have full party in several minutes. Playing cata though nearly impossible with pubs.

DLC is fine too considering you can play all of it without ever paying for it
