I don't know why but i always prefered this king of "realistic" graphics than 3D.
It just looks real, just like Diablo 1 and Diablo 2
And the gameplay can get so deep and interesting its just amazing how this game holds up even by today's standards.

It took everything that made its predecessors fun and expanded upon it. It's really rare for that to happen these days.
I think the reasons are very similar to the reasons that people prefer Diablo II over III.
Both D2 and Homm3 fixed almost all the problems that their predecessors had (both D1 and Homm1 & 2 had some wonky gameplay elements) and had very memorable gameplay experiences with tons of replay value.
In contrast Homm5 and D3 are mechanically superior to their predecessors in just about every way but lack the artstyle, story, and originality that made the earlier games so beloved.

H5's necromancy "fix" is fucking horrible, when coming across a multi-creature army there's no way to split the creature stacks to make them affordable so you're forced to see that stack of 5500 power liches disappear without ever getting one.

Maybe I just have shit taste, but I never really got into the HoMM games. I gave HoMM3 a fair shake, but I found the core gameplay loop to get repetitive very quickly.
Acquiring loot so that you can kill monsters so that you can acquire more loot to kill more monsters doesn't really appeal to me unless a game does a good job at disguising it. I don't like Diablo for much the same reason.

Everyone here who says HOMM5 > HOMM3 have no clue what's going on. HOMM3 was good because of the details and because it's good at world building.
You go to a lepricon? A textbox tells you what happens and why you get a couple of gems. This is what the newer ones lack, actual world building, immersion and magic.

Remove the nostalgia factor and H5 is essentially H3 with fancier graphics.
One could argue it is also more balanced but that's only for the base game. Expansions went full retard with the dwarves and alternate unit upgrades.
