>for years hear that Silent Hill is one of the most unnerving and tense horror video game series
>finally get around to emulating it
>atmosphere is nice and I start to see why people say it's scary
>first enemies are tiny flesh birds and easy to kill dogs
>then teddy bears with claws and ghost babies that can't even hurt you
>sprint through the school, ignoring everything

Has the game aged poorly or something? I just can't take this shit seriously. All of the enemies are waist high and are easy as hell to kill or just run past. Does it get better?
>>
Maybe. If you hate the hospital, might as well drop it there. Or maybe not since the game isn't long.

>ignoring everything
Do you mean enemies or everything?
>>
>>339236425
Enemies.
>>
You might be jaded, if you play a lot of horror. Everyone in their mind knows that you can probably sprint through the whole game, but doing that will always make it less fun. I played it for the first time last year and I thought it was great, with the graphics adding to the atmosphere.

Keep playing because the best horror parts are relatively far in.

>first time entering the otherworld in the school
That was the pinnacle of the entire series for me honestly
>>
>>339236484
OP here. I fucking hate horror games. I'm the biggest pussy in the world, honestly. I had to get wasted just to force myself to finish Until Dawn because I couldn't do it sober. But something about this game makes me not give a shit at all.
>>
>>339237332
if the school's otherworld does nothing for you, you might as well stop playing

but these games (1-4, at least) aren't scary because of cheap-shit jumpscare horror; they include themes and events that are, imo, genuinely disturbing, and putting yourself in those shoes are a big reason why they are perceived as scary
>>
>>339237738
I haven't come across the Otherworld yet, so I'll get to that and see where it goes from there.
>>
>>339236076
>Has the game aged poorly or something?

Yes, kinda. Play 2 and 3, they hold up way better.
>>
>>339237332
Not sure why it's not working for you, I was terrified at multiple points to go into the next room. Maybe SH2 is more your thing. It's stronger on the story and atmosphere end, in a less strictly-horror and more character-driven way.
>>
>>339237807
Honestly, even 2 can lose its effect if you give the controller to someone who wants to play it like an action game. I had a friend who just ran all the way through the pre-apartment section of the game, ignored all the dialogue and spent most of the time smashing enemies with the plank and complaining that he couldn't figure out where to go. It was really depressing to watch.
>>
>>339237789
The soundtrack will floor you once you do get to the otherworld.
>>
it's a survival horror dummy, you're not supposed to run around shooting everything like if you were in vietnam
but yes, it has aged poorly
>>
>>339237967
I guess every game loses its effect when you just don't give a shit.
>>
>>339238149
I think he was expecting a horror game, just more of the monster-closet action variety. We were shithead teenagers at the time, so it's not like we knew better.
>>
>>339238005
I don't shoot everything, I smack it. I smack every fucking dog and every single teddy bear I come across with my fat lead pipe until they stop moving.

Try Fatal Frame, it's fine to start with 2.

Same here OP. Never got the chance to play as a kid and just bought it a few months ago. Can only stand to play for an hour or so at a time. The game's cool but the story so far has been rare and convoluted. Also the game's way too easy. Just passed hospital so hopefully it picks up.

Silent Hill is a great series but not as scary as people say. Play REmake with headphones if you want something tense.

Play hard mode

>>339239334
What I played of shattered memories was spooky at especially since you can't fight back. I got lost so many times though.

I meant the Resident Evil one lol. You'll enjoy it if you found SM scary.
>>
>>339239459
I may be already. I guess I could check later.
>>
>>339239621
Yeah I know, I was just commenting on it not being scary. I want REmake but I'm too much of a cheapfag. I haven't paid even $20 for a game in over 3 years. I'll cave in eventually though
>>
>i just ran through the game ignoring enemies, why didnt i have fun?

>RE anything
>Scary
The jump scares might get you on your first playthrough, but that's about it.
REmake is a fucking amazing game, but it's scares are limited. The atmosphere, camera angles and lighting do make some eerie sections, but there's only a few of them in the game. The area where you place the death masks and the encounters with Lisa Trevors are probably the best in that sense.
>>
It's not as scary as it is disturbing. Yamaoka's OST really nails the atmosphere as well. Although once you get far enough to encounter Rompers it gets anxious as fuck, at least I do. They creep me the fuck out.
>HUH HUH
>>
>>339236076
Finish the Hospital section and see if that does anything for you. Personally I thought the beginning+the school was one of the scariest sections in the game so if that doesn't do it for you then I guess you just won't like this game.
>>
Sh2 is the best for scary AF atmosphere just for gods sake dont play the remaster.
>>
>>339240178
The school was pretty legit.
The hype of the game back in the day coupled with the fact it has aged I think is the issue. You guys are making me want to go finish it though.

Fair enough, I just can't think of many games in general that got me on edge. Maybe Amnesia when it was new.

Of course, what do you think the story is about m8?

Damn I really want to emulate it but the controls are weird as heck compared to resident evils.

Aren't they pretty much the same? I didn't have any problems going from SH to RE but I don't know what it's like going the other way.

After playing so many horror games I generally don't get scared of games anymore. Silent Hill 1 is amazing just because of the mood and aesthetics. Specifically the use of rusty metal textures, sound design and camera angles. They all combine to make something very unique, something the later games don't hit quite as much but they do their own thing.

Also the plot is really interesting if you decide to replay it a few times to understand it. As a kid playing this game I was actually really spooked by the concept of a town with barely anyone in it, phone lines out and a flying thing out in the fog. Even just the fact that it felt like a twilight zone episode was enough to make it memorable as a kid..
>>
>>339236076
its mot the monsters that are scary, its putting yourself in the shoes of the main character and getting lost in the nightmare worlds. Its more unsettling on a physiological level as opposed to ju,[ scares
