Trying to compete directly against blizzard was a dumb move. Now they are giving inumerous discounts to try to sell the game, you can even use discounts on top of other discounts to get the game up to 55% OFF. Even steam had the game for 40%.
I also heard this was Gearbox biggest investment yet and they've spent more on this game alone than the entirety of the Borderlands Franchise.It's their 4th fuck up in a row.
Duke Nukem apparently did poorly on initial sale and Take 2 said it actually did some profit, but only months after release and after they estimated their profits to 1/4 of the initial expectations. Alien colonial marines did really well on launch but left a incredible bad taste on everyone. 2k and Gearbox stated that TPS sold terribly and didn't even break around one million copies until this year(2 years later and counting the handsome collection), the fact they ahd to close the studio also and cancel all future dlc for the game also didn't help either. Gearbox said battleborn is selling as much as Borderlands 1 did but he didn't stated if he is comparing to the time of it's release or with it's total lifetime, which i highly doubt.

Battleborn is a lot of fun. I got bored with Overwatch in like one day. Battleborn's in-game moba upgrade system provides a ton of replayability in pvp. Choice can drastically alter how fighting against a certain character feels.

The big mistake was:
1) Trying to compete with Blizzard. Blizzard timed their shit to really overshadow Battleborn. Gearbox should have probably waited a month or so to let the hype die down. As big as Overwatch is pushed, many people will move on as they always do, though the simpleness will keep people playing it like Hearthstone and HoTS. They got greedy and saw that the hero arena sort of games were the next "thing" and rushed it out to try and be the first
2) Zero marketing. The problem wound up people just assumed it was a cheap copy of Overwatch or in the same vein when its more of a first person moba than anything else.
Its actually quite fun when you get past the issues (hence recommendation to have held off a little longer before release). Some builds are kind of set in stone but some characters are really flexible in the gear and talents you pick. Story missions kind of meh for the most part and some legendary gear can be bullshit at times.

The single player is 8 missions long with times ranging from 25 minutes to probably 1 hour if you're bad or the level takes awhile. You can also queue for a coop game and vote on which map to run through.
It's pretty easy on normal and you can relax very well if you play the right character and get into the groove of things. It'd definitely be worth $10, hell with the content provided I'd argue it's worth a solid $25.

Nah, Borderlands 1 was fine, there was very little dialouge at all (no side missions had any) and what there was pretty standard stuff, the humour in Bl1 was mostly pretty dark and cams from the constrast of the incredibly bleak and depressing world of Pandora mixed with the art style and personalities of the characters. It felt like they were trying to be dark and serious but didn't do it very well and put in enough humour to make it an arkward "I shouldn't laugh at this, but they somehow managed to make murder lighthearted and cartoony".
It felt a lot like older kids platformers, where it was written by someone who's not a writer to try and be kiddy (or in Bl1's case mature) but the cynicism and humour slipped through.
Bl2 and onwards was WE MUST MAKE EVERY LINE A JOKE.

I kinda feel bad about Battleborn, Randy Varnell (NOT Pitchford) who is the creative director is a really cool guy and I was pretty excited about Battleborn when it was first announced and there was a ton of interaction from Gearbox to the community (pretty much just Borderlands players, who wernt neaisarily the people Battleborne was aimed at).
Anyway I was quite active on the forums during that time and spoke to devs a bit, pestering them for Solo-play and Split-Screen (which they confirmed after 8 months of "can't confirm"), but then the beta happened and the game just wasn't fun.
The devs worked hard, and were super passionate about thier game, but from what I can gather basically none of the fans who were there at the start actually bought the game.

i bought it on a whim yesterday because i had a casual friend over that wouldn't shut up about it
we did a bit of the story campaign and multiplayer. its actually got a lot of content and the ults don't seem flat out broken like overwatch. leveling up mid-match lets you customize your character which is nice and the equipment system isn't bloated like actual mobas.
the character designs are hit or miss though. like the main girl is some unattractive tumblr shit with some nasty voice. the game has couch co-op but you lose 1/3 of the screen because they lazily wanted to lower the res for both players, so both player's radar is offscreen to the left.
they should have advertised the game and delayed it until people got bored with overwatch. its crazy how people are blindly hyped for that game just because the marketing and butts.

Ok, so I'm someone who legit likes Battleborn, and plays it alongside Overwatch and I can tell you where it all went downhill.
If they focused on having less content they could have launched it much sooner and cheaper, letting it gain some ground before Overwatch launched and also had it be the game people play when they didn't get into the Overwatch beta. Less content at launch also gives them a chance to make more and more updates down the line to keep people playing instead of just 5 new characters to look forward to like the game has now. And they launched it a few weeks before what is arguably the biggest game launch in a very long time, and pulled off shit like that "Come at be bro" tweet that put them in direct competition with Bliz.
Devs need to learn from this and Evolve. Even though you can make enough launch sales for a game to have made profit and be considered a success, people will never buy another game from you again when it dies in the first month. I'm honestly surprised people are hyped for Battlefield 1 when Hardline and Battlefront were dogshit that died almost instantly (at least on pc)

In spite of some other troll posts around, i honestly think Battleborn will be loved by more people.
Here are my facts:
Gearbox being one modest company considering their performance and generosity with Borderlands series and how exceptional they have been doing it since the beginning ( not counting the pre-sequel that has to do a little with the original series )
Blizzard being a in both esports and evolving an MMO- (Obvious reasons if you ever followed WoW and HoTS and if you know whats been going on in these kinda games ( i also want to add design behind hearthstone and how dull the meta is and how slow the development is, spending MONTHS between expansions but im guessing the here would know little about it))

Whey I play battleborn I have the same feelings when i was playing Diablo 2 or Dota 1 backdays or some other complex old-school games where you really have to dig and figure out how things work. And what is very cool it is so exciting to do yourself, not watching youtubes, or reading guys. It's very interesting to get to know the game by playing it. Even though, it has longer sessions than average MP game out there on the market, but you feel involved in what's going on!
I was very sceptical about Battleborn myself, but after 10 hours of beta and 10 hours of release version I find myself spending all my free time exploring the game.
I have concerns about late game and competitive part, but I hope guys from Gearbox will figure things out.
I bought deluxe edition, hope my extra bucks can make the difference, so if you still not descided, you might wanna get this game to dive into really cool gaming systems. This game is very fresh about the experience it delivers.

BL1 was a good game that hit me in all the right places. I played a lot of BL2 and it left nothing but a bad taste in my mouth. It was more than the writing and the memes /v/ complains about.
There were much fewer gun options in BL2. Mashers and Double Anarchy mods were turned into Legendary guns. And then good fucking luck finding a Legendary item, because they made them stupidly rare. But you still needed them, so you had to farm them in order to tackle the bullet sponge mobs that comprise the late game.
And the whole incident involving The Bee still pisses me off.
gearbox once again produces a quality producti've never forgiven gearbox after that travesty of a port that was Halo: CE on PC, makes the NTSC version on xbox the definitive way to play Halo: CE still imo
