My main incredibly idealistic pipe dream is the removal/reworking of clone or redundant characters. Lucina and Dark Pit are the most blatant examples.
Lucina has no purpose considering Marth already exists and Robin and Corrin cover the Awakening and beyond era of FE while being their own characters with their own movesets.
Some of the KI:U items like the Ore Club could just be incorporated into Dark Pit's moveset, fixing both the items being saturated with Kid Icarus stuff and Dark Pit being basically identical to Pit.

Sheik just coasted in on the gimmick of Zelda being able to transform. Pretty much the same as ZSS. I'd also assume Rosalina only got in because of the puppet character gimmick.
Characters that get into Smash always seem to either get in because they're popular, central characters in a popular franchise, can have a gimmick attached, are easy to add, or are just personal favorites of Sakurai.
