He can't even get the KO unless someone puts the monster in a trap so it sits still. I've seen some good hammer action in the jap speedruns but all of my experience playing both with randoms and with MHG has shown me that the vast majority of hammer users are complete shit at using the weapon and all they do is increase the hunt time with poor contribution. I have seen maybe 3 competent hammer users in all the hundreds of hours I have played P3rd, 3U, and 4U.

Still more valuable than a hammer. A shock trap, pitfall trap, or mount gets the group the exact same benefit as a KO and anyone can use those items and mount. You can't even cut off a tail when you need one. You have to get someone else to do it for you. Hammer is bottom of the barrel. It's a hard pill to swallow but you're just going to have to accept it and move on.

A good HH never puts the horn away, pretty much solely targets the head unless there's a Hammer or Impact CB around that gets in your way, and keeps the team buffed consistently.
Horn Maestro is the one main skill you need, since it keeps your buffs going longer.
Past that, Evasion +1/2/3 is a good skill to shoot for, since it lets you dodge things easier and not get hit.
Other than that, the general standard skills are good. Sharpness +1 (unless using the Seregios HH), Challenger +2, Razor Sharp, etc.
Also, it's a good idea to Hone your horns for Life, so you spend less time healing and more time smacking and whacking.
Me, I typically roll with the Seregios HH and Star Knight armor, for all the skills Star Knight gets, plus Maestro and Evasion +3and also Health -10 because of the Evasion gems

Armor sets or Song sets?
Armor sets you generally want Horn Maestro + whatever other blademaster skills you want. I generally prioritize Razor Sharp and evade skills because HH recovery from attacks kind of sucks, and you don't want to be sheathing because it can easily fuck up a song if you unsheathe incorrectly, so you'll be evading a lot. It's been a while, but I think my general HH

As for song sets, you generally just want to go with whatever's useful for a hunt.
Attack Up and Defense up are universally good songs to play
Earplugs is great for rooms where people don't have Earplugs or HG Earplugs on their armor set
Negate Stamina horns are also incredibly helpful in rooms with Dual Bladesalthough I've barely seen any, Hammers, Lances, and Switch Axes
More situational songs like wind pressure and negate status effects can also be incredibly helpful on Rath/Kushala fights and Chameleos because fuck poison.
Also, Status Attack Boost is really fun in a room full of status weapons. Dragonwood Godflute is my favorite status flute, but the Teostra Horn is also pretty good. Not a big fan of the Chameleos Horn, but I don't like poison that much anyway, and you're probably better off using a negate wind horn for Kushala anyway.

Lance all the way baby, having to dodge/run away feels too pleb after I got the G rank G.Agnaktor set on MH3U and started counterlancing everything and standing right in every monster's face all the time.
I've never had any problems breaking parts or because of lack of DPS, my only issues with the Lance are:
