The only real difference here was that he sometimes puts up walls to trap you and then either shoots a bunch of rockets in an easy to dodge pattern, or does the two waves that always come low and then high.

The Hell Guards fight was far more complex and interesting.

I died a few times to solo Hell Guard just trying to figure out his pattern. Once you realize you can shoot a rocket at him when he's charging his energy ball thing to stun him, the fight becomes significantly easier. For me, the Cyberdemon was just a matter of keeping constant fire on him while occasionally strafing left and right or jumping slightly.

Every time you die, it's a result of you making an actual mistake that could have been easily avoided by thinking faster and planning better, dying because you didn't pull out the right weapon at the right time to deal with the right enemies in the right order while maintaining spacial awareness so you can keep up your momentum avoiding damage. If you died because a hell knight kicked an explosive barrel into your face, you should have shot the barrel a second earlier to damage the hell knight. If you were standing next to the barrel, you should have moved elsewhere earlier. 100% planning and skill and reactions and decision making, no bullshit.

Something I'm surprised I haven't heard anyone mention yet, is how bloody smart the game design is.
Like, the first 10 minutes of the game manage to tell you all of the game's basic tennants with only one single text pop-up for the glory kills, and honestly, I'm not sure how else they'd get that across.

Like, the very first fucking thing that happens in the game is Doomguy kills a demon. The very SECOND thing that happens is Doomguy gets a gun. You could start off knowing LITERALLY NOTHING about this game, and within the first ten seconds of the game, you know literally everything you need to to start playing, without a single word spoken or written. That's smart.

The absolute brilliant part comes in later, at the first gore nest where you have to fight Imps for the first time, and the game, in the same wordless way, shows that you can jump up onto platforms and that there's stuff up there you can use.

And then, later on, it does get a touch more complicated with the upgrades and such, but that opening section is seriously genius level game design. And genius in a way I honestly never thought we'd see in an AAA game in 2016. If DOOM was literally any other game, you'd at LEAST get a text box at the top of the screen saying "You can shoot demons with the left mouse button" or some shit

I don't want Quake 5. Quake 2 and 4 are both the weakest points in the series. If they go back to Quake, I want a Quake reboot in the same vein as Doom 2016. I wonder if they intentionally made the Baron of Hell look like the old Cyberdemon, minus cybernetics, of course. The new one is alright, it's a cool looking enemy but it just doesn't have the same raw, monstrous look that the original had. It also doesn't strike fear into the player with its cry like the original. The OG Cyberdemon's roar is burned into my brain. Quake logos for MP and Snapmap, Quake logo on the Avatar of Sin, Quake logos on the demonic tablets. It could be that they're just easter eggs like the other stuff, but most everything only got one easter egg, and Quake stuff appeared multiple times.
The only other game with more references to it was references to the older Dooms. Soulcube, Avatar of Sin easter egg, Mother Demon from 64, tying in Doom 1, 2, Final Doom, every .wad ever made as completely canonical through the story.

Plus the sentinel guys look pretty Quakey to me. And some guy who apparently has authority says they're working on Quake right now. But it was just a tweet and I don't know who the guy was.
