After MGS3 (the last good one, with the exception of maybe POPS if it was more fleshed out and not on fucking PSP) we should have had a decent series about BB's backstory, and Fukushima should have been kept on the team to keep Kojima in check. MGS1 2 and 3, while people have their differences about which one was the best or whatever, they're all great games. 4 was a travesty. The series has been dead since that point as far as I'm concerned.

MGS 4 is less of a game than it is a massive love-letter to the twenty or so years that Kojima put into the franchise as a whole. It was never meant to serve as an amazing MGS game- or, if it was, they must have known that it is folly to both make a grand love-letter spectacle of your entire franchise AND also make a tight, solidly produced game.
How is it not a love letter display instead of a game? The 90 minute ending cut-scene, the thirty minute cut scene's before and after every mission, the massive introduction which removes the player from the game via a cutscene every ten meters. The entire game was nothing but ego-stroking fan-service for Kojima.
And you know what? Looking back, it achieves that goal perfectly. They throw heaps of nostalgia on top of you while also throwing new enemies, locations, characters, weapons, etc.. In your face all of the god damned time.
MGS4 is not a perfect game, but it is a perfect fan-service stroke for those who truly grew up with the Metal Gear and MGS franchise.
Children might not understand, as they were maybe seven or eight when they tried Metal Gear Solid 3. They didn't drop twenty hours on the PS1 demo-disc that contained the first two areas of Shadow Moses. They didn't walk around asking their friends what the fuck Metal Gear Solid 2 was about. They just don't know.

but MGS5 isn't a sequel, it was supposed to be the link between big boss and snake, the creation of Outer Heaven, with the Fox Unit, it was clear since MGS1 that Sniper Wolf met Big Boss at that time, most of MG characters come from this time.
This episode was pure fan service, The end of PW was clear, the creation of Outer Heaven and the events of MG1, MGS5 was just the possibility to see and play through these changes to a known ending.
