Mario and Luigi games (or any of the Mario RPGs)
Final Fantasy 6, 7 or X
Bravely Default
Any of the Tales of games (Symphonia and Vesperia are generally considered the best)
Persona 4 if you want a more relaxed game with a bigger focus on story
SMT IV if you want a more challenging game
I think Chrono Trigger, Bravely Default or SMT IV might be the best for someone to get in to JRPG's. They aren't too "weeb" and don't have the cringy dialogue that JRPG's are infamous for.

OP start with Kingdom Hearts first. It's the perfect starting point. It's a nice mix of weeb and American nostalgia. Then you can go to Chrono Trigger. After that, play Final Fantasy 4 - 10. Now you will be ready for the big league weeb shit like SMT, Persona and the Tales series. Once you achieved that, you're ready for the disgustingly weeb Vita shit

It depends on what you like and are looking for. I personally think that if you're trying to try out JRPGs for the first time and aren't really into Japanese games, you should start with something easy to get into while still somewhat representative of the genre. Maybe try:

>Xenoblade Chronicles
as a means of seeing something somewhat familiar to Western games while still seeing some high quality titles JRPGs can be. Alternatively, if you want just high quality JRPGs, then try:

>Final Fantasy VII
>Final Fantasy X
And the like.

Chrono Trigger, by far.
I mean, I LOVE the game, but it really is the most basic of beginner's JRPG. If you don't like CT, I doubt you'd like most of the genre.
It's got everything a classic JRPG should have, it's easy but charming and fun, it has a battle system of relatively interesting depth, it has some fucking stellar music, pretty unobtrusive and interesting characters, and it has (mostly) great pacing
Then afterwards I would recommend Grandia 2 and maybe one of the FF games like 4 or 6. I'm split over whether to recommend 7 or not because there is always the absurdly-small chance that the remake will actually just be the completely definitive version of the experience (though I doubt it).
Then you can make the real JUMP into weeb games. I would personally recommend as your first "narrative-driven" JRPG either Persona 3/4 or The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC/SC.
Trails in the Sky SC was my fucking GOTY 2015, so I would really recommend the series. It's extremely good, in my opinion, if you can handle the slow burn.
