The Mustang, being an optimal escort aircraft for the B-17/B-29, was an excellent aircraft for high altitude dogfighting and extreme range patrol/interception.
However, as longer range bomber aircraft became the norm (the B-29) a single fuselage aircraft was seen as sub-optimal for escort.
So, what do we do? We weld two P-51s together.
Worked pretty great, served with distinction in the Korean war as night fighters and ground strike aircraft.
