I almost always play as a guy in these cases. I don't really care for people calling my self-insert "ma'am" or "her".The only exception that comes to mind is MH on non-handhelds where the graphics are pretty enough that the girls can be hot, mostly because that's not really a dialogue-driven game. It just means that you get to look at a cute girl in this case.
I also don't really consider pre-designed characters to be quite as self-insert, even if they're silent.

So here's a question for you: When it comes to empathizing with the cast, games aren't all that different from other forms of fiction. You live vicariously through the characters in movies, too. That's what gets you so invested in them.
Does watching a movie with any scenes that have you empathizing with the female character the strongest make you trans?I'll answer that. No, that's ridiculous. A character doesn't have to literally be you in order for you to empathize with the character. Otherwise, how would you ever enjoy playing as a space marine who grew up on a planet other than Earth and does things other than sit at his computer all day? You can love being a man and wouldn't be born any other way, and still empathize with a woman.
