Imagine that you could copy food as you please. Food producers then stop focusing on volume, and instead on quality models for you to copy via GMO and other methods, with gimmicks like "better taste" and "lower calories" and what have you.
They would own the rights to specific food makes / recipes and you would rent permission / purchase license to use their prototype and replicate them for yourself. If you then gave the replicated prototypes away to other people, you would be violating intellectual property laws.
FYI, this is already starting to be a thing. Monsanto owns the patent to soy and corn and all derivatives, which allows them to sue farmers that accidentally grow their crops when the seeds blow in from neighboring areas.
