I paid $20 for TF2 when it came out, and it was probably about half the game that Overwatch is, going by the content quantity only.
$40 is a fair value. I got the Origins version on Amazon for $39 after taxes, which includes Tracer for HoTS (basically a 10 buck add-in), so I feel like I spent my money very fucking well.

TF2 had a pathetic community and a dwindling player count until they introduced hats and made it F2P. CS:GO had the same situation until it introduced skins, yet it didn't go F2P. It is now the most played FPS on Steam month over month, with a ridiculously higher number of players over the next most-played title.
We're talking 381k playing CS:GO at 4:58AM CST. The next highest game has 62k, the next highest is TF2 with 61k -- a seriously impressive number considering the age of the game.
It's not hard to see Overwatch being a huge title for years to come on PC.
