What are some ways to improve the horror genre, /v/?
>>
More jumpscares, more creepypasta monster pushing and more guns
>>
>>339120938
Subtlety for one thing it isn't creepy when you know a jumpscare will happen.

>Turn around!
Not a thing was there but you still shat yourself a bit.
>>

>>
>>339120938
Humans are naturally afraid of the unknown, so never reveal the monster/enemy while focusng on atmosphere and buildup
>>
>>339120938
I swear, if this is the kind of thread I think it is...
>>
>>339121886
I still jump when the dogs go through the windows in Re1/Remake knowing that it will happen everytime.
>>
>>339120938
a layered scream effect that builds up louder and louder until its unbearable

i almost have a panic attack if im on the sidewalk and a loud truck or motorcycle goes by
>>
>>339122071
That sounds annoying as fuck, just like loud vehicles.
>>
Actual consequences for getting caught/surprised instead of just starting over.

You know how terrified you feel in older games when you have one life left and a tricky enemy is threatening to undo all the progress you made in the last 45 minutes? Combine that with an actual scary monster
>>
>>339122071
Kinda like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfX9z6Ed2rs
>>
>>339120938
Place a Youtuber shrine somewhere in the game. I always get horrified by those.
>>
More body horror.
>>
>>339120938
Experiment, this is what kickstarted the genre back in the day. Both in the visual department and in gameplay. Some of the creepiest games in existence were unique, or at least innovative.
>>
>>339121886
But then the tension is gone once the player catches on that they're never going to be shocked by something scary looking

Make it fuck with the hardware, i.e. controller locking up or inputs you didn't do or open the disc tray if you get caught by the monster or have it alt-tab into some /x/ shit or something

the crucial part is that you don't advertise this and don't overuse so people don't think it's the game and actually think it's a spoopening
>>
>>339122214
yea but with more human-like screams added in, female mostly

Can never happen because of certification. Games are not allowed to mess with hardware at all anymore.

We need more monsters/creatures/villains that defy normal, human defined time and space. Show me some creature that is a horrific cartoon-looking creature out of context in our modern world, or something that blurs the senses and dimensions.

>>
>>339123359
Taking control away from the player during gameplay is a cardinal sin of game design.
>>
>>339120938
bizarre, unsettling, uncanny valley movement.
i hate it when a good monster design is undermined by shitty animation/locomotion
usually some cliche twitchy, fast foward, vhs jump cut shit. just a lazy attempt at a jumpscare even after the monster is already revealed
i want monsters that move like freakish cripples, more realistic, cumbersome and painful looking
heres some examples
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqwlX8WGSFM

this entire channel https://www.youtube.com/user/Jirinovsky1/videos
>>
>>339123453
yeah but I'd fuck the ghost
>>
>>339123359

You can have the controls not do anything for the game anymore, you aren't allowed to mess with the system buttons.
>>
>>339123276
Vr is won't have anything good for years to come.

They should focus more on the psychological aspect not the oh shit in your face.
>>
>>339123524
I WOULD ALSO FUCK THE GHOST
>>
>>339123425

Example: an anime girl.

Immerse the gamer in VR and convince them life is normal, as they know it. Then throw in a terrifying, screaming, 2d anime character in this normal 3d world running towards them and shouting bloody murder. It confuses the senses.
>>
>>339120938
>Start game with objective to flick switches, presumably to weaken monster
>Go around old dark house, occasionally hearing heavy breathing, footsteps, screams, etc.
>Keep flicking switches, build up for jumpscares, but nothing too major, maybe just some creepy imagery.
>Eventually flick the final switch
>Go into next room and hear a voice say "Last of the generators is offline"
>Cut scene then plays as you enter the room and devour everyone

RRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>
>>339123480

maybe have controls tied to a fear meter/mechanic, the more scared you are, the less responsive your controls get.
>>
>>339120938
stop putting generic, strong and powerful protagonists into scary situations and calling it horror
if you can effectively defend yourself then it can never really be scary
creepy and atmospheric maybe, but you'll never be really scared if you're powerful, like in a game like dead space or resident evil
>>
>>339123252
Twilight Zone 80s movie did that pretty well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMjt12y9rI8
Sorry for all the analysis crap, I couldn't find another video that had just had the monsters
>>
>>339123561
VR would do a lot more for the psychological aspect than the in-your-face aspect

being completely immersed in the game at all times with sound, peripheral vision, etc. vs trying to keep the gamer from remembering he's looking at a monitor
>>
>>339120938

Give up on trying to make the game scary. It's just a video game, it's not going to be scary to anyone but wusses.

Concentrate on trying to make it unsettling but don't make the mistake of thinking repulsive is just as good.

Play Silent Hill 2. AKA Sex symbolism, the game.
>>
>>339123719
This, it also applies to movies. Horror movies are so worried about being horror that they are rarely any good at all.
>>
>>339123860
clowns are beings of justice, not revenge
>>
>>339120938
unpredictability balanced with difficulty
making the game not so hard that you get caught by the monster often enough to become accustomed to a consistent pattern (death animations, kill screens) but also coupled with a variety of unpredictable results when death DOES occur.
>>
>>339120938
some better combat would be nice. condemned managed to have great combat while still being spooky as fuck.
>>
>>339122392
Thats the exact moment when the devs have to fuck the player up somehow. A good horror game will designed with this moment in mind and capitalize on it.
>>
>>339123685
In the end you're still looking at a monitor regardless it's just inches from your eyes in vr's case.

Be comfortable then made uncomfortable while not right in front of a screen works better imo.

>>
>>339124574
probably a fuckload of work

Hell, most sea-based horror stuff we get is set in underwater bases and whatnot instead of the actual deep sea stuff. Programing an entire game about something so incredibly expansive and making swimming not boring are already two very problematic things
>>

Water in games has always been the spookiest shit, even without any spooky stuff in it. I could not hunt sharks in Far Cry 3 without a gun boat. I can't wade far into the water from the beach in GTA.

if a game had just random shark attacks or horrifying monsters in the water, I might actually have a panic attack.

work on atmosphere and trying to instill the fear of the unknown, STALKER SoC managed to do it many times

I don't know about never revealing the monster, but I'd be okay with never explaining the monsters origins or whatever. I remember being very afraid in SOMA when you first wake up in the fucked up undersea lab, and then loosing all that once they explain how you got there.

I guess the "standard" ending would just be the PC getting the fuck away from whatever the evil was, without giving much of an explanation for the evil was. Later playthroughs could actually give explanation.

I still really don't understand why people like horror.

For one thing, why do you want to be scared? Fear is a reaction to things that need to be dealt with, in my mind. When I'm scared, I think about what needs to be done to ice the motherfucking thing that's scaring me or otherwise just deal with it.

For another, scary things have, over the years, went from actually freaking me out and making me cower to making me go into an offensive stance and become really tense and, if I didn't know any better what to call it, angry. Scary shit just makes me angry, after the initial shock.

Facing fears > Subjecting yourself to them

That's how I got over my arachnophobia, by punching spiders. I sometimes don't even bother getting up to get a tissue to smack them anymore. Just go on the offensive.

/v/, why do you like to be scared? What the fuck is appealing at all about it?

Enough making Horror games first person. It just doesn't fucking work because it gives the player too much of a chance to joke around and you're able to see if the enemy is close behind you when running away.
Don't add a jump button and have things context sensitive to add a slowness to the movement where you really have to consider "should I try and open this right now?"
Finally, don't use the same gimmick of an enemy the entire game. Have 4 or 5 different enemies throughout the game and mix them up from time to time but have them extremely hard to kill.
I can go on and on but I know it will all be a wasted effort. The way horror games are now are only scary for people who don't play games.
>>
>>339129982
It's a love-hate relationship, and it's hard to explain. Plus there's probably a bunch of reasons people like to be scared.

For me, it's a little bit of the thrill of getting past the fear and also a little bit of enjoyment in being freaked out. There's enjoyment in the tension when you're waiting for the fear to hit, too.

I dunno, it's probably something to do with the after effects of the fight-or-flight response. That burst of adrenaline.

>>339120938
The important thing is that something scary has to stay scary or threatening after the player has died to it. Most of the time once people see the monster, any large sense or horror leaves because now the atmosphere isn't based on being hunted by some unknown force. If the game doesn't continue to stress the players with enemies after that, then it just devolves into the closest related genre and now it's shite of both worlds.

That's the reason why Alien Isolation worked well for me. You learned the rules of the Alien and the mechanics you could use to protect yourself, but you always had to be on your toes and fighting in every way you can in order to get by, knowing all the time that you were up against something far above your league. It could take its time getting to you, but you couldn't slip up once or take one look back or you're done.

A good horror game needs to transfer well from fear of the unknown to a justified paranoia of the known that just absolutely drains on the player's endurance. This can take many forms like the unstoppable Xenomorph in Alien Isolation to the daunting fact of limited ammo, ink ribbons, and the durability of even the most basic zombos in Resident Evil 1+2.

There's nothing rational about primal fear, Anon. The ocean is massive and unfathomably deep from the small scale of being human. It's also largely mysterious even today. There may not be any kind of sleeping elder god or anything on the ocean floor, but that doesn't stop your mind from screaming "Don't fucking go down there!" when you peer into the dark.
>>
>>339120938
The problem with horror games is that the Japanese have all but left the genre.

Western devs don't really understand how to envelope the player in a world of fear.

They think that body horror is all it takes, or that isolated moments of shock equate to a feeling of horror.

What the Japanese excelled at, and the reason survival horror was so popular for a good few years, were feelings of dread, suspense, tension and uncertainty.

I will contend that Five Nights at Freddies has made effective use of the core thematic of a jumpscare (that is, a suspense into a payoff), but a jumpscare, no matter how well done, cannot compare to a pervading sense of foreboding and uneasiness that permeates the entirety of a playthrough of Silent Hill or Haunting Ground.

PT showed incredible promise, and was truly terrifying, through its use of repetition to create an inherent mystery and strangeness to its world, which only ever progresses forward and never takes a turn that you expect (including a "jumpscare" that doesn't actually jump at you).

At the end of the day, the only way to save horror is to get the Japanese back in on it.
The West has a completely different grasp on "scary," which isn't really all that scary, especially when the audience is in control of the action.

Western tactics may be serviceable in film, but the same effect can't really be achieved in games.
>>
>>339130781
