I've never built a gaming pc before, and decided to save around 2,500 USD to build a desktop after hearing about the nvidia 1080. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to improve this selection?

Get DDR4 ram, get an SSD and your cpu cooler is overkill, unless you want to do sick overclocking ofc. Also, why such low rpm on hdd? Get a western digital black. Upgrade cpu to 6000 series. And for fuck sake, dont buy an OS.
>>
OP here, sorry Im not very computer savvy, but thanks for all the feedback so far
>>
Go for the i5-6600k instead. Cheaper and faster.

Go for 16GB ram.

Get a 1TB HDD instead of 2.5tb archive and a 256GB SSD for Windows install.

Obviously switch motherboard to accommodate skylake CPU.

Go for a 750+ gold certified PSU for upgradability. (Also from a reputable brand. Don't cheap out on it)

GET A BETTER MONITOR!!!!!!!

I'm serious. It's what you will spend all your day looking at and the extra cost is justified. Get a 27" display that's IPS. Or an ultrawide if you don't mind some games having to be 16/9 for compatibility.

Also wait until AMD unveils the new Polaris GPU's and benchmarks are out before buying your rig.

If you're going for that high quality of a build, you might want to get a better monitor, and invest in a 5.1 audio system.

Also get a better Hard drive (7200RPM), an SSD, and DDR4 ram.

>>
>>339119445
First, don't cheap out on the PSU. Wish I never did. Get a good bronze to gold rated 750, it's worth it. Second, memory is an odd choice, and any more than 16 on a gaming rig just doesn't make sense really. Also seriously get rid of the HDD. 6tb sounds nice but the speed is atrocious, get a 7200rpm minimum for decent load times, or use a primary SSD and that if you need that much storage. Everything else about it wouldn't be my choice personally but it doesn't seem that dumb.

You are paying more to get less. Aftermarket 1089s come on June 10th. Wait until then and buy a superclocked aftermarket card that's got two proper fans instead of a fucking blower that'll sound like a jet engine under load.

Swap out the processor for an i7 6700k.

Marginally better performance, but it will allow you to use DDR4 instead of DDR3 ram.

**IMPORTANT, IF THAT MONITOR IS NOT A 4K RESOLUTION MONITOR, BE SURE TO GET A MONITOR WITH A REFRESH RATE OF 144**

With a refresh rate of 144, you can easily hit 144fps in most games with that setup.
A 60hz monitor is an injustice when you have a beast rig like that.

>>
>>339121905

It takes some research to know what's good and what's a meme.

And despite what /v/ says, www.logicalincrements.com is a decent place to start, if it's your first build and you don't know anything. I wouldn't recommend blindly buying one of their parts lists, but it's a good reference.
>>
>>339119445
Don't listen to these faggots. i7 is fine, and i5 is going out the window.

Drop that cooler down to a cheaper one. Iirc Cooler Master makes a $34 one that's served me well so far.

Ditch the Windows 10. Get a cheap Windows 7 OEM or just pirate it, anything but W10.

If you get a good case, the fans should be superfluous and included.

Get a SSD for your bootdisk. Lightning fast startups.

The $700 grafix card seems excessive, but if it fits in your budget then go for it. You want to splurge on the processor, matching mobo, and graphics card. Everything else is personal preference.
>>
OP, don't get a seagate drive. They're prone to crashes, especially for storage sizes greater than 2TB.

Hitachi is best, Western Digital is a close second.

https://www.backblaze.com/blog/best-hard-drive-q4-2014/

Also, get an m.2 SSD to store your operating system on along with the game or two you play most. Crazy fast read/write speeds, you'll have a near instant boot and load times on it versus a traditional HDD.

Anon, all you had to do was get less ram, a better monitor since the GPU was overkill for it, a less cheap case, an SSD since your budget allows it, and maybe change the processor for an i5-4690k, since an i7 is not necessary for your needs, unless you think paying an extra 100 dollars is worth a few extra fps.

Do NOT cheap out on your power supply, you'll have a bad time. Wait for the 3.5 meme to price drop, it should get cheaper in a few weeks, or go for a 1070 which will only be a bit more expensive, but the performance will be worth it. Get a better monitor, a 970 paired with a 60Hz monitor is sad. Check out logicalincrements.com/monitors or read reviews for monitors with at least 120Hz. And again, if you dont want to deal with Windows 10, dont go with a 6000 series CPU.

>>
>>339121905
Everyone's got to go through a few "mistake" builds on paper at first before fully understanding what makes a good build.

Really, you weren't far off. The CPU cooler was unnecessary, you had too much RAM (16 GB is ideal), the HDD you chose is bad (get a 7200 RPM drive - 2GB is probably fine. Add a small 128GB or 256GB SDD if you want for much better load times on the OS), your case chose could have been better, and finally you should pick a better monitor. With a 1080 you should either be going 1440p or 1080p/144hz at least.

As far as the monitor goes, at 1080p/144hz I'd recommend the VG248QE. At 1440p I only really know about the really high end ones, butr the Acer XB270HU 1440p/144hz monitor is sublime.

Nice, this is a lot better!

A few criticisms:

You probably don't need a full tower case. Mid tower should be fine. Of course, full tower leaves you with more wiggle room in the future, so totally up to you.

As far as the CPU cooler goes, if you arten't going to overclock it you won't need to buy a cooler, the one that comes with the CPU will be fine. Again, up to you.

At 1080p - even at 144hz - a GTX 1070 will probably be more than enough for you rather than a GTX 1080. You could save a solid $250 by going that route! Again though, with the 1070 don't go founders edition. Get one with a third party cooler.

That's about it. This build looks very nice other wise. One piece of advice i'll give you is I think it's always good for people to invest in a decent mouse. Doesn't have to be crazy or anything, but something like the Steelseries Sensei is much more enjoyable to use than a crappy $15 mouse, so consider that.

>>339125634
