Well, probably because it was fairly original (I don't think there have been many first person parkour games) and the aesthetics were good.
Initially, I really liked it, but I went back to it a year or so ago and overall I'd say it's vastly overrated: the story is awful, the game has way too many shitty segments (mainly the combat segments), and the platforming isn't anything special.

I'd say this is good soil for a sequel to capitalize on what it did right and correct it's missteps. ME2 looks like it's been through the mill of homogenization.
At worst people and critics will see this and it'll flounder. At worster people will love it's mainstream appeal and critics will praise it for it's presumed progressive themes and it'll sell millions having killed itself in the process.
