That's not correct at all. You can only play with a few people at once. The "towns" have a bunch of people but those work like lobbies and still have channels or whatever.

COD is also not MMO. Only supports... 32? players per match. Posting a wiki article isn't going to help your point. MMO usually means "massive" amounts of people like Everquest/WoW/whatever game. Planetside is probably the only FPS I can think of that hits MMO status. This is also why Guild Wars is not really considered an MMO. It just has 8 person parties and lobbies.

I played it a bit, the actual combat seemed alright (played the summoner but you don't actually get a summon for a while). The crafting/gathering/whatever mechanics seemed a pain to get into and shit was not explained for the most part (not to mention you can access a bunch of the windows for certain mechanics before you get to the part of the story missions that actually allow you to use them, but this is never mentioned).
Also all the clothes are basically real money only. Regular ingame equipment looks extremely samey.

Probably not. I have 100 hours in it but never bothered to finish the launch story mode because the story was shit, gameplay was heavily flawed, character builds were super limited due to lack of customization, and the enemies were all damage sponges. Orr was absolute shit at launch, even ignoring the dozen bugs everywhere.
Areas are pretty and jumping puzzles are cool, but the actual game isnt fun to play past level 40. And the story has gotten worse from what I've heard.

I'd like to blame the casual crowd for this one, back then you actually had a sense of community in games and you actually needed other people in order to success, nowadays MMO's are more of a 99% singleplayer experience with the occasional dungeon or raid, since the more casual people didn't have as much time/didn't want to put as much effort as the regular players, they demanded things to be made for them, and of course devs would cater to them since they are the most profitable market, can't really blame them for doing that.
I know my point of view is kind of stupid and has been said a million times, but you can't deny that there's a certain magic that's missing from these games nowadays. Maybe it's just nostalgia, I hope not.

Because of that we end up with resources going to Pokemon in WoW, a MOBA in FFXIV, etc., meanwhile raiding is doing the same fight you've already done, but with bigger numbers and a few more added variables.
Working your way from Karazhan to Sunwell just felt so rewarding, clearing Coil and learning more about Louisoix, Alphinaud and Alisaie was great, but because casuals are the target audience devs gave in to give them that same content but easier.
MMOs simply need to stop trying to cater to everyone, it's impossible.

The "spreadsheet bullshit" is what allows Eve Online to be a sandbox at all. It's a true sandbox because everything is made by players. Which means people need to know what to make, what they have, who to sell and where, which means comparing prices that people are willing to pay, etc... It's all supply and demand management.
It's really only the combat that would survive by removing anything involving spreadsheets.
