how does /v/ justify piracy?
>>
average person does not give a fuck
>>
Video game companies are too big and too corporate nowadays.

I only buy things with heart.

Also a cheapskate.
>>
it's fun to play games, and I can get them for free if i pirate
>>
Try before you buy innit
>>

The same reason I imagine pretty much every pirate does.

I don't need to give justification, neither I want it
>>
No demos, no refunds, untrustworthy reviews, so if you buy anything that's shit you get hosed so the logical step is to do what it takes to not get hosed
>>
I don't, I'm just a cheap piece of shit who sometimes just wants free games
>>
I dont.
I loathe pirates. They're nothing but thieves.

There is simply nothing you can do to stop them.
>>
>>339091649
It's only entertainment. Idgaf

>>
>>339091649
People who pirate don't need a reason. They do it cause they can.

There you go

Games cost more in Australia for no reason.
>>
I don't. I'll pirate what I please and I don't justify it because I don't need to.

Why pay when you can steal and get away with it?

If they didn't want it copied without their permission, they shouldn't have put it in an environment that 1) copies things exceedingly well
and 2) put it on a medium that allows access from anywhere on the planet.

>>339091649
I used to actually steal a lot when I was a kid. Got caught a few times but ran away before cops could do anything. I stopped stealing where I could get caught.

Piracy isn't stealing, but it's similar. Let me know when i'm actually at risk of getting in trouble and I'll find another way to get my content for free.
>>

no demos and constant dlc, season pass and microtransactions bullshit.

Hell, in some cases you need to pay to be a beta tester.

I pay only for indies

>>

No, because those Jews will cut people/costs so that they can make their money.

The ones at the top ALWAYS make their money. Shit rolls downhill, not up, and the consumer is at the top of the retail pyramid.

I don't need a reason.

I'm not like one of those faggots who use the "w-well... it doesn't affect the sales of the game or affects the company's revenue if I wasn't going to buy it anyway! T-the money only affect retail!"

I know what I do is wrong under DRM regulations, I'm broke and I still want to be apart of gaming discussions, so I pirate games. And even if I have money, which many times I come across, I still pirate. There is no worse feeling than falling for the hype, purchasing a game, and then realizing its a piece of shit and using mind games to justify your purchase.
>>

This has been like this since before Frank Sinatra. Seriously.. where have you been?
>>
>>339091649
Because I'm sick of paying big money for broken ports and bad games especially when there's no demo I can use to judge the product. Essentially, I'll pirate it so I can give it a go. I've bought many games I've otherwise had no interest in simply because I've pirated it to give it a go and found that it was actually really good.
>>
>>339091649
I don't. There isn't a justification. I'd steal and rob shit in real life too if the opportunity and repercussion cost were as low as it is with piracy. You'd be fucking dumb as a box of rocks not to.

>>
>>339094286
So you don't listen to pop? The biggest money-maker in the music industry and the scale by which the metric is made?

That's not surprising, but most artists do not write their own material.

Also, I guarantee every single of of the bands you listen to have a marakable percentage of their songs not written by anyone in the band, covers not included. That's just how the industry works.

Do I really need to justify it? I don't care. It's just copyright infringement, who gives a fuck. Life is too expensive and short to justify spending $60 on every new digital toy that comes out. All these "DOWN WITH BIG CORPORATIONS!" faggots are annoying, I literally only pirate games because it's easy and free. The developers get paid to create the game whether it sells well or not, do people actually think they make the game for free and then get paid per copy sold?
>>
>>339094009

Depends on the music. This has been a normal thing in pop music for decades. Did you know Michael Jackson didn't write thriller? He had a team of songwriters for that. Conversely, dedicated songwriters are unheard of in, say, Heavy Metal where the music is almost always written by the members of the band.
>>
>>339094514
No I don't really listen to pop. The only example I know of a song not being written by its performer is that "These Boots Are Made For Walking" song by Sinatra's daughter or whatever.

Also I very highly doubt that Black Sabbath, Budgie, CCR, David Bowie, Deep Purple, Diamond Head, Dio, Dire Straits, Eagles, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, Megadeth, Metallica, Mike Oldfield, Motorhead, Mott the Hoople, Pink Floyd, Queen, Rainbow, Roger Waters, Simon and Garfunkel and The Who didn't write their own songs.

Even Steam refunds is not an excuse. If you refund too many times, they will warn you that Steam refunds is explicitly NOT a "trial" service. It is there for games that won't run for you, not for games that you don't like.

I'm broke and I can either spend $100 CDN or play the game for free.
I genuinely buy games I really liked later on anyway, but ultimately I don't need to justify it, its just a game.
Its like saying you need to justify playing Boardgames for free on Tabletop Simulator instead of buying and playing the real one.

When I was a kid I pirated games because I literally had no income and liked games, and as an adult I pirate games because I have bills to pay and games are expensive as fuck. When I have the option to just play them for free instead, I'll take it. I'm not going to just stop enjoying games just because they keep increasing the prices

I've got a pretty good excuse, actually. Piracy is acceptable because publishers insist on releasing games at western prices in my country, where the average income is 4-5x lower than in the west.

Of course I would still pirate even if prices were lower because games these days are shit and I'm not gonna pay for 15 minutes of fun. I've only ever bought old games.

People can do whatever they want, but as long as they don't throw a temper tantrum when developers have the audacity to protect their product and ensure sales

>>339103003
I did all of those things, and I would not give a fuck if developers tried to stop all of those except for ROMs.
Take your strawman and go

1) Most games are shit and don't even meet minimum standards of anyone with taste anymore and developers don't deserve money. If the games themselves aren't shit, they often aren't polished and have horrible performance these days. See From Software or Ubisoft.

2) There usually isn't a demo. If a game is really good and deserves the money, you can still buy it afterwards.

3) Police doesn't care about pirated games, they mostly care about (new) movies.

4) 95% the people that pirate games wouldn't have bought them otherwise. They just take it because it's free.

Imagine you are at McDonalds, and everybody is buying food and the place is so damned busy that you can sneak in and grab your food for FREE because nobody will notice

That's piracy

Why pay for food when you can get it for free

Yes it would be bad if everybody was that one guy taking the food for free but the point is not everybody does it so it's OK to be that one guy because nobody cares and it doesn't matter
>>
>>339103074
The "sticking it to the man" part is secondary and only plays a role when it comes to games that I will actually buy, the bottom line is that it's free and I don't give a fuck.

>4) 95% the people that pirate games wouldn't have bought them otherwise. They just take it because it's free.

Which is also proven by Denuvo games which sell like shit despite not being pirateable.

This is true

>Police doesn't care about pirated games
This as well. You can get away with downloading like 7 AAA games in a day and nothing will happen

>95% the people that pirate games wouldn't have bought them otherwise
Thats a lie. There are multiple statistics showing otherwise

Well, that's the topic. Doesn't change the fact most games are shit and unpolished or publishers even literally lying to their customers. This One Piece muosu, for example. It has the graphics of the Vita version but gets marketed on Steam with pictures of the PS4 version. Most famous example is probably Dark Souls 1, though.

It's literal robbery.

>and ensure sales
Personally, I'm a lot less likely to buy a game if I don't have the chance to play it first to see if I actually like it.

With how shady marketing these days, and how many publishers just try to hype up bad games and make a tonne of sales in the first week, I'm not going to risk $100 on a game that might be fun.
>>
>>339103934
>robbery
Ah yes, because I'm threatening the developer with a gun while pirating his video game
>>
Most of the time I just pirate cause I don't have any money so theres no other way to get the games

But sometimes I actually do it because there is no demo available and I want to see if my toaster can run the game. I did this with SFV and found out that no, my toaster can definitely not run SFV.

Because people don't want to accidentally support shit games. People love their hobby, they don't want to ruin it.

If a game is good you can still buy it later when it's on sale or something. Everything is better than ever paying 60 bucks for a piece of shit that kills our hobby.

Today you can't even trust reviews anymore, so.

I can't justify it. I'm a broke motherfucker who can't afford games but I buy the ones I know I enjoyed.

When I was working, I bought Darksiders off of Steam. The game constantly froze or there was a black screen (this was before refunds were a thing). I got a hold of support from the devs, to see if I could get a fix or something, they threw some suggestions, none worked, then they just stopped responding. Same with THQ. So, I then contacted Steam's support and asked if I could get a refund because of the problems, and told them that I would just be happy with it being in my Steam wallet since I was just going to spend the money on another game, anyway. They did, and I bought something else. Can't remember what it was off the top of my head.

Anyway, I pirated Darksiders and goofed around a bit with the game, and oddly, had the same issues. After fucking around with it, I started unplugging stuff. And wouldn't you know it, my fucking keyboard was the problem. My fucking keyboard was preventing me from getting out of the fucking black screen shit at startup.

When another sale rolled around, and had a different computer built at the time, I bought it again later now that I knew what the problem was and didn't have any problems after that.

But here I am, broke as fuck again, jobless, but haven't pirated since.

I don't pirate and i have no issues with people who pirate and keep to themselves.

The pirates I can't stand are the arrogant fuckers who have developed a false sense of superiority and like to tell everyone that they're morons for spending their money how they like.

like it? donate to devs so they don't starve to death

don't like it? don't donate to devs so their shit games go away

Because it's easy to get replies by demonizing it.

Also, most of /v/ is consolefags who are too retarded to pirate things.

The risk vs reward analysis for pirating makes buying games that you can pirate a literal retard position

Society is constructed by profiteering and capitalism where the rich people do / are associated with a lot of indirect benefits so they keep fat wads of cash, or knowledge that isn't easily shared.

You take every advantage you can get, even in vidya.

Used game sales have always and will always hurt publishers and developers more than pirating. Particularly when it's one of those single player campaign games that you can rent and beat in a weekend. Good beyy.
