The less "collectathon" a game was at the time, the more fun it was. Games like SM64 were good because the stars were basically an afterthought, the real gameplay was completing levels, defeating bosses, getting to a hard-to-find place, beating a race etc... people commonly complain about having to collect all the coins in Sunshine. The only really good collectathon series I can think of is the Spyro PS1 trilogy, every other one goes way overboard. DK64 basically killed the genre by being too much of a collectathon. It's not a favourable term.

They're alright, it's the kind of genre that only needs a new entry once in a scant while or it gets stale very quickly.
Just look at the n64, the 3d collectathon genre pretty much was both born and killed on it.
They just didn't know what the hell to do with the 3d graphics, so everything copied mario64 and became a collectathon, until dk64 came along and put the final nail in the coffin and then proceeded to hammer in a dozen more nails.
